Depends if you want the TV features....All around the AIW is better in that is has a TV tuner built in...However the 6800GT will give you better performance in gaming

I am seeing both have 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders, however the AIW has a much higher core clock speed and also the 6800GT is OpenGl 1.5 compared to the AIW which is OpenGl 2.0. So would the 6800gt really be better?

The 6800GT supports Shader Model 3.0 while the AIW X800XT does not. Most new games take advantage of SM 3.0, so the 6800GT would give you a better gaming experience (it performs better in all gaming than the X800XT anyway) and can be overclocked to a 6800 Ultra fairly easily. The AIW X800XT is better all around, though, as Strider said.

The memory chips are also different on the two cards. The AIW has 2.0ns chios where as a normal x800xt has 1.6ns chips. In terms of those 2 cards the 6800gt for gaming.

Also I would save up the extra $70 and get the ATI x850XT a better card than the 6800 also you can flash it to an XTPE.

People really need to get past the fact of the core clocks and mem clocks...To compare the clocks of GPU's would be the same as if you tried to compare the clocks of Intel Machines and AMD machines...Yes Intel has higher clocks but does not mean they will perform better then an AMD machine in everything...
It is all because of the way the chip is built.

...Or you could get an even cheaper Sapphire Radeon X800GTO2 and flash that to a full X850XTPE , but if you want the AIW features, why would you be stuck between a pure gaming graphics card and an AIW card? LOL

Yeah but since the x800XT AIW is only in AGP I'm guessing thats what he has.

Go for the AIW if that's what you need. The difference in gaming will not be much. They are both great cards.
