San Diego 3700+ vs. Opty 146/148

Thread Starter
I'm looking at the 148 and the 3700+ on Newegg and the 146 on Monarch. Would a 146 or 148 (both with random steppings) be better than a 3700+?
Discuss.

It's hard to tell without seeing the actual processors which would oc better.

I would imagine the 148 to be faster thant he 146 simply because it is the same CPU but higher clock speeds, Any Opteron will be the same as a San Diego core clocked at the same speed since they are both essentially the same core, except SOME Opterons tend to overclock a bit higher, I don't know though, I would go for the 3700+ San Diego my self.

I've just been leaning towards the optys because of all the hype, but your saying the San Diego will OC more than a semi-decent stepping for a 146 or 148?

I was also torn between a San Diego 3700+ or an Opteron. Decided for the 3700+ at the end. Currently running at 2.9GHz. An opty may overclock the same. Aslo, They are usually cheaper.

The likely overclock of both these CPUs (3700 and the Opterons) is between 2.7Ghz-2.8Ghz. If you get any more out of it than this then it'll be a nice bonus.
I'd go for the cheapest option

Aren't the opterons more stable because they use the cream of the crop in silicone? I'm only planning on aircooling with a Big Typhoon, so could that possibly help any stability issues at a such a high clock on air?

Edit: I was also planning on using a DFI SLI-DR Expert and either an OCZ Powerstream 520W or a Seasonic 600W.

The hype was created from the first batch of Opterons. I have yet to see anyone on this forum hit 3.0 on air with any Opteron. Both will OC nicely, but there's no way to predict what stepping you'll get. Overall, I'd say your chances are better with the 3700,but.......are you feeling lucky?

Not really. Only the CABNE 0530 stepped CPUs were the beasts and are no longer available. There are still CABYE steppings available, if you're lucky, that often hit 3Ghz on good air cooling. After this, you have the CABNE 0540, CAB2E 0540 and CABGE steppings that seem to mainly o/c upto 2.8Ghz (ish).

Okay thanks for your help guys. I think I will go with the Opty, but of course I will change my mind three to four times before I order lol.

And yes sccr, I am feeling lucky. It's better to be lucky than good in the computer world.
