In addition to my re-reading of the Sword of Truth saga, I recently found first editions of Saberhagen's First Book of Swords and Second Book of Swords. It occurred to me that I had not yet read them, so on I plunge.

First Book of Swords, Fred Saberhagen, Fantasy
Vulcan forges 12 magic swords to distribute among the mortals for the entertainment of the Gods. This is the beginning story of one young man thrown in the middle of the Game of the Gods.

I am currently reading Well of Ascension, Brandon Sanderson, Fantasy.

This is the follow up to Mistborn. Vin, Elend, and the rest of the Crew strive to establish Order after the fall of the Lord Ruler.

I finished The Second Book of Swords and am currently looking for a First Edition of The Third Book of Swords to read.

The Second Book of Swords, Fred Saberhagen, Fantasy.

Mark and Ben strive to find a great hidden treasure trove where multiple Swords might be found.

Century Rain, Alastair Reynolds, SF

His other stories are good too. It takes place in a future where our world is no longer habitable. A copy of the past world has been found in which history has been subtly altered and drama occurs over its fate.

Lucifer's Hammer, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, SF

Covers the events leading up to, and following the impact of a comet on the Earth. Includes two mostly fictional NASA scientists describing the comet with a hot fudge sundae analogy.

I loved Hammer. I have to reread it, though as it's been 20 years since my last read through. I REALLY loved Footfall, which came out in '85.

I will check out Century.

I just finished:

Blade of Tyshalle, Mathew Stover, SciFi/Fantasy. This one is hard to describe. Another world exists where magic is real and magical folk are embroiled with humanity in a struggle for power. From Earth, a dark Hero tries to save himself and the world.

This totally needs to be revived tongue.gif

I highly recommend "Turing Evolved". There are a few points I might argue, but it really hits on some of the moral issues we run into with categorising what it means to be human. As a philosophy and CS major I highly recommend this book. Also, its free!

Here is an Amazon link, but I'd suggest getting the one off the authors site. It's more well formatted.

Thank you, Fir3Ch3if. I hate to necro my own thread! lol

Speaking of, I recently read Steig Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire. Both of which are great crime dramas that would interest most members of OCN. Book 1 moves a little slowly whereas Book 2 is almost non-stop action and drama.

One of my CS professors recommended that book to me! I have a copy in my room, but I'm probably not going to get to it until our next break frown.gif

anti-double post edit:
I recently had a rave on the subject of books and thought I would see if OCN had a book club! And thus how I wound up here.

Battle Royale - Koushun Takami. Fantasy.
Battle Royale ]is an extremely good read. It's basically what the idea of the Hunger Games was so obviously borrowed from. This has been quite a debate, I won't go off about it here. But alas, If you read and liked the premise of the Hunger Games, read this book. Or even if you haven't. 42 Japanese students are thrown on an island and made to fight to the death. The island is zoned and every hour a couple zones are marked as forbidden. The kids wear necklaces that will explode if they try to leave the island or enter a forbidden zone. The whole book takes place in 24 hours I believe. You will get sucked in.

Deathstalker - Simon R. Green. Fantasy.
My favorite series of all time is Deathstalker. Very fast read, 9 books, covers every topic possible. It's a space opera. Like Star Wars. It's seriously amazing. I could go on for hours about this series, and you would have to read it to believe half of what I said. Follows Owen Deathstalker, a scholar who just wants to mind his own business(typical). He basically gets thrown into a galactic space war. I really can't say a lot out of fear of spoiling something for a potential reader. Interesting characters, fast paced. A little overwhelming at first, but once you learn all of the characters you will be on edge when a new chapter begins, frantically thinking, "Oh yeah! I forgot how intense this next part is going to be." Every chapter.

Malus Darkblade - Dan Abnett & Mike Lee. Fantasy.
If you like evil characters being the main character, Malus Darkblade is awesome. Set in the Warhammer universe. Follows a dark elf who will basically stop at nothing to get what he wants. This book has everything evil in it, deceiving, treachery, torture, human slaves, etc... This book is definitely out of the ordinary. It's the only book I have come across that is so blatantly dark. Malus always finds a way out of any situation. His cunning ways and tenacity always puts him ahead. Oh, it always helps that his nauglir(riding beast) is named Spite.

Those are my three highest recommendations. I make my friends read them. The ones who read anyway.

Edit(s): cleaning up and correcting my format.

Just a thought, would anyone like to find and read one book that we all agree on? We could discuss it for a bit then work on finding another.

I'll try to look over some of the books already posted and see what I can find.
