I have decided that I want to do 5.1 after coming really close to buying a nice 2.1 setup, I also want to spend 2x as much now.

I am looking at the creative gigaworks and Logitech for something cheaper.

Creative G500 310 Watts RMS 5.1 GigaWorks ProGamer Speaker System - Retail
or
Logitech Z-5500 505 Watts 5.1 Speaker - Retail
or for something half the price...
Logitech THX Z-5300e 280 Watts RMS 5.1 Speaker - Retail

My friend has a logitech Z-5500 pluged on his DVD and it sounds REALLY REALLY good. The subwoofer is marvellous as well as the satellites. And it's THX certified!

Would it not be wise to upgrade to a good dedicated sound card first to take full advantage of the 5:1 setup, maybe a SOUNDBLASTER X-FI XTREME. So imho i would get the cheaper setup and buy a good sound card.

Nah, I already have a card in mind that will save me a lot of money.

Thanks for the input guys. I like the creative's though because of the options for speaker wire. The rear ones will be about 7ft behind me and I will have to run the wire around a door frame and part of a wall, so I will need the wires to be long. The creatives are also appealing because of the mounting options.

It is hard to see if the z-5500's have that. I have ruled out the z5300e due reading a few reviews.

Try the Logitech Z-680s. They are the predecessor to the Z-5500, although older they perform exceptionally well, and are THX Certified as well.

Since it's old you probably won't be able to find a good price for it retail. But there is always ebay.

I have the Z5300e Logitechs and have to say that they rock! The Z5500 are just digital versions with about twice the power, if you want a no compromise system, the BEST is the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1, case closed. However, it is PRICY! So, out of those Z5500 unless you can use that saved money on something else, then go for the Z5300e since NOTHING touches them at that price, heck my Klipsch 2.1's cost more lol!

I recomend that if you really want to find what you like best, go to a store and listen to the different sets, because you won't sit and look at the specs when they get to yur house, you'll crank up your favorite music.

After having owned 5.1 sets, I can tell you that from now on, I'm sticking to 4.1 because the center channel is useless unless you're gonna watch movies on your comp. Even then, I still prefer the sound of having the "dialog" come from the front 2 speakers instead of the 1 center channel. With that said, here is IMHO, the absolute best deal in computer speakers...........

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...560&category0=

As far as length of wiring, go to radio shack and replace the stock wiring with speaker wire. It will allow your amp to run less hot by decreasing the impedance/resistance and also increase the sound quality. Most of my friends have this sit and it's all you'll ever need and more.
