512MB x1800XT or 256MB 7800GTX OC Edit: now 512 7800GT

Ok in a little debacle here, so Im not sure on which one to look at purchasing.

As of now, I'm pretty sure I am going to upgrade my comp for christmas, I'm pretty much looking at an AMD platform

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Asus ANV-8 Mobo
Patriot PDC1G3200+XBLK 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 Dual Channel
(memory can be changed, not sure on it et)

As of now I havea 256MB 9800PRO and it works great but the new Mobo is PCI-E and not AGP so I'm going to need a new card. I have a projcet I am working on that will give me $500 which I plan on using to get the vid card but I'm stuck at what to get.

I've seen reviews for both nVidia and ATI 512MB vid cards and most say that the extra 256MB of on board memory is worth it, but I read the review on the XL a couple pages back and it got me thinking and I saw another review of the 256MB 7800GT (not GTX) and some of the marks were better than the 512MB XT.

There is also the fact that the nVidia drivers work with Dual Core systems (which is what this will be) and the ATI drivers are lacking.

So, I have at most $600 to spend on a card but I dont need to spend all of it if I dont need to. The 1800XT will be $550 and the 7800GTX OC is $515 or so. Is the extra memory worth the potential hassles with drivers that arent out yet or buy it and wait for the drivers since having te extra memory is worth it or get a solid card now but then eventually I wished I went for the extra memory if both companies will phase out 256MB cards and opt for the extra memory in a few years.

I'm hoping not to have to upgrade my vid card for a while so I'm asking to some advice on which to get since it's a HUGE part of my system. I play BF2 and will get CoD2, but just want to get ideas from people who might have experience in this field more than I do

EDIT: I have a limit up to $600 which I can get the 512MB 7800GT, so include that with the other 2 but I think it eliminates the 256 GTX

Well the X1800XT is faster, but not too much faster until you get to COD2 maxed out.. I would say get the 7800GTX for like $460 or so, no use paying for what you can overclock to pretty easily.

But do you think by spending $100 more for the extra memory would be worth the extra $100.

My main thing is i don't want to upgarde this card for quite some time if im going to spend nearly $500 or $500+, the extra $100 isn't all that big of a deal since essentially I'm not paying for it.

I could possbily get the 512MB 7800GT for $600 since it's my girlfriend's dad's website im making and they're pretty well off and I mentioned that i'd want a vid card in return and she shook her head, i could bundle that into her gift to me as well.

So essentially it'd be between

512MB Sapphire x8100 XT $549
512MB Gigabyte 7800GT $599
or
256MB BFG 7800GTX $460

I'll have to talk to her to see if I can get $100 more for the site or bundle it with Christmas and/or maybe my b-day which is in Feb anyway

Swing away

Its the X1800XT, not the X8100XT. And 7800GT 512? You sure its not the 7800GTX 512? If you really can get it, get the 7800GTX 512 its the fastest card (assuming thats what you meant).. If its not what you meant i'd like a link to the 7800GT 512, because if its anything like its 7800GTX 512 brother, it will have crazy high stock clocks for a 7800..

Can you get specs? And also, the GTX has 24 pipelines, GT only has 20.

I saw a review of that card. They stick a Zalman cooler on it for you also. Pretty sweet setup, but not sure if you'll find it in stock because it's a low scale design. Btw, whatever you decide, make sure you get a card with 512 mb since you aren't going to upgrade for awhile. If you don't, you'll be locked out of high settings on some games that your card could probably run if they'd allow it to try.

What about an SLi setup with 2 of these

eVGA e-GeForce 7800 GT PCI Express 256MB DDR3
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=322739

It'll cost the same as the 512MB 7800GT and I get 512MB of DDR3 memory rather than 256MB, I know there aren't that many SLi optimized games out there but it is the wave of whats to come.

Yes,but remember that PCI Express is a scalable technology just like AGP. In the future, you're going to see PCI Express 32 interfaces,SLI2,etc. I was stuck at AGP 4X while everyone else was at the 8X
