HTML5 was scrapped - too many bugs. I think BigM could probably expand on that a little more than I

Haha oh yea it's calles CLASSIC now... They were and are all fun and good in their own way, I hope I get some time off work somedays so I could delve into them again!

Oh no frown.gif it would've been brilliant if they could've spent time and money to fix the bugs and expand it that way, Java just isn't that..great..especially with what HTML5 has to offer. I tried it on a few Windows tablets back then and it worked well, even though it wasn't touch-optimized at all, it still worked, and there wasn't near as much lag as with the java version. Kinda sad, but of course it's more important and totally reasonable not to go deeper that way because of the technical challenges and huge amount of time and money it would've required.. but imho it would've paid itself back in the next few years. Maybe. Hopefully. biggrin.gif

HTML5 has been scrapped in favor of a new and better client based on C++. The new client (Code named RuneScape NXT) is supposed to offer greater performance than even the current Java client with visuals exceeding the HTML5 client. Currently, it's in what I'd call the alpha stages. Planned release is currently unknown however, a beta will be released sometime during the second half of 2015. The eventual goal is to phase out the Java client in favor of NXT, as it opens up a large array of new technologies and enhancements that are currently not possible with the Java client. A few screenshots have been released showing the new client in its current form, and a Reddit user has been kind enough to compare the old versus the new:

Left is old, Right is new:

These images are all we have right now, and are very early images. None of the lighting as been done for the darker areas, which is why Darkmeyer appears very bright.

Some of the new features of the client include:

A new material system may make bump mapping support a possibility. Other graphics improvements will include global illumination, atmospheric light scattering, cascaded shadow maps, screen space ambient occlusion, improved post-processing and reflections, gamma correction, and high-dynamic-range rendering.

Let me know if I can explain anything better/expand on anything.

Op will be updated today. Was going to do it yesterday but someone took down an entire street's worth of telephone lines by taking out a telephone pole so I had no internet all day. Also am uploading the newest RS client version to my OneDrive. Nothing major changes wise, they just fixed a bug with chat time stamps.

Wow, that's simply amazing! And those graphics for a browser game..! Can't wait biggrin.gif Thank you! Especially those new features are exciting. Sounds like we might even get SweetFX working at some point with the desktop client huh? That is if it uses DirectX.

Not a brower game anymore at that stage since it is its own client and more browers are dropping java support with time, chrome just did not to long ago.
