Also, was at Burthorpe doing a little bit of training during 2xp weekend, and someone said Java had no limits and was thinking I was an idiot for thinking that it was good for them to change their coding. No limits, huh? Max stack (although could be solved w/64bit), max items on screen, render distance, thread #... Yup no limits.

With the new client, max cash/items stack isn't going to change. That's handled by the back end which will still be RuneScript (Jagex's custom JavaScript). Render distance, multi-core support, etc. will be changed as that's all handled by the front end rendering engine which is what is being converted to C++. My one gripe with the new client: it's 32-bit with a max memory support of 1.8 gigs. While in theory that should be fine, it just puzzles me that if they're making a new client from scratch why in all hell they would go with a 32-bit client (especially if they plan to convert the back end to another language at some point, which I've heard whispers that they do.) The way I see it is NXT is phase 1 of a larger plan to bring the game up to date and they're basically creating more work for themselves in the future.

I wasn't inferring that any of that would have changed wit the update. I know some of it will change, but not all of it. The main point was the guys thinking I'm an idiot but saying Java has no limits.

Basically, they're converting the client front end into C++. Back end server stuff will still be Java and the "tick" system will still be in place for the time being, though they have said they may possibly look into altering it once work on NXT is finished. Essentially, they're doing as much as they can to get away from Java without having to rewrite the entire game. The new client promises improved performance on low and high end machines over the current Java client while offering graphics that are superior to the experimental HTML5 beta. However, at this point in time graphical improvements for those of us with high end machines are not their main focus, performance on the low end spectrum is. The game will also be much, much more compatible with Linux and Unix based systems, obviously, because of this change. ETA for a beta is less than 6 months.

Edit: Forgot to add, another main factor in the creation of this is that they really are hitting, and in some case are exceeding, what is technically possible with Java. This will enable them to do bigger and better updates while not hindering performance.

I heard that with the new client they can remove the squares we walk on alot easier which is a huge game changer. rolleyes.gif

Yeah I know what you meant. Tbh that's the typical RS community.

Looks like invention is pushed back to January. More time for you Bigm to be comp'ed and gives me more time to max smile.gif (Even though I could do it within a few weeks, who knows! I'm lazy.)

I could definitely see how a change in the rendering engine could make that a lot easier. Like I said, they are basically at the point now where they are literally past the point of what is possible with Java and are creating all kinds of workarounds that are going to haunt them later.
