What is with cable's up speeds?

Thread Starter
***, I just read another thread about internet slowdown and someone reccomended speakeasy for a bandwith test so I decided to try it for fun, this is what happened (attatched) 4.8MB/s down speed but why is my up speed 354KB/s?? Is cable supposed to be that slow uploading? BTW I have RoadRunner....

That is normal for cable or any residential broadband connection to have download speeds much faster than up. As to why that is, I'm not sure I guess ISP's assume people will not upload as much as they download.

Btw watch your values, MB/KB (megabyte/kilobyte) and Mb/Kb (megabit/kilobit) are different. There are eight bits in every byte so divide your Mb/Kb reading by 8 to get your byte speed.

For browsing you dont need much upstream to request pages. downloading files is the same. When running a game server, web server, any server, this is where you need the upstream so for residental uses you dont need big upstream. However when using p2p or bit torrent those prog are uploading quite a bit and can choke your connection. Your connection seems pretty good though.

Id say your connection is as it should be for RoadRunner. I also have RoadRunner and and my test is almost identical.
If you would like more upload speed I think you can pay extra.
I know for me its enough. I cap Azereus at 35KB and have no problems surfing the net or playing WoW.

Good tip DevilDriver. One should with out doubt cap the upload of any p2p program. sometimes doing so in the p2p client itself will also limit your download speed. if you find this to be the case you can use a 3rd party program like "netlimiter" to do the same and get around the download speed throttling issue.
