Asus Maximus II Formula Overclock Help

Thread Starter
Hi guys my first post and im excited to be part of the forums. I'm hoping someone can give me some advise with this board, to overclock my E8500 to 4.0. Currently I have it at 3.8 but cannot get it stable at 4.0. There are so many tweaking settings it blows my mind. So far I have only adjusted voltages.

Here are my specs.

Mobo - Asus Maximus II Formula

Cpu - E8500 ( Zalman 9700 Cooler )

Ram - 2x2gig 8500 OCZ Reaper

Video - Vapour X 4890

PSU - 1200w Coolermaster

Im on 3.8 and stable at the moment but was hoping for 4.0 here are my current settings. Ram is set to 1066

Cpu Vlt 1.3
Cpu Pll 1.5
Dram 2.2
Fsb Termination 1.4

Thanks in advance, if anyone can post there settings for bios it will be much appreciated.

You can try to adjust the GTL's and some others.

You may want to check out this thread for the Max.

Thanks mate for the reply, I subscribed to the link a week ago and cannot post or ask for help until a moderator accepts me. There is not much info I can find for my processor with this board there.

Hi and welcome to OCN

Not much of a respons from Maximus II Formula owner here at OCN, well, I shall try to help you, it was sometime since I run the MIIF, see if I remember.

First, which stepping (revision) has your CPU, C0 or E0, C0 may need more voltage then E0 to get to 4,0Gzz and maybe to much to be comfortable for a 24/7 setup, in due time you will know, check stepping with CPU-z

Second, that cooler may hamper your OC ability some later when you gonna run some stability tests, might get necessary to run that fan at full blow to cool that CPU.

Third, we focus to get that CPU OC first, then the memory, so therefore I suggest to have the memory at ratio 1 : 1 until you have found the limit.

Lets start with bus 450, CPU speed 4,05GHz and memory @ 900 5-5-5-15.

Here´s a bios template for you

Code:
Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
OC From CPU Level Up [Auto]
Ratio CMOS Setting [9]
FSB Frequency [450]
CPU Clock Skew [Delay 100ps]
NB Clock Skew [Normal]
FSB Strap to North Bridge [Auto]
DRAM Frequency [DDR2-900MHz]

DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A1 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A2 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B1 [Auto]
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B2 [Auto]

DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
CAS# Latency [5]
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay [5]
DRAM RAS# Precharge [5]
DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge [15]

The rest of memory setting is at auto

DRAM Static Read Control [Disabled]
DRAM Read Training [Disabled]
MEM. OC Charger [Disabled]
Ai Clock Twister [Auto]
Ai Transaction Booster [Auto]

PCIE Frequency [100]

CPU Voltage [1.3625]
CPU PLL Voltage [~1.50]
FSB Termination Voltage [~1,30]
DRAM Voltage [~2,20]
North Bridge Voltage [~1,40]
South Bridge 1.5 Voltage [~1,50,one step above auto]
South Bridge 1.1 Voltage [~1,10, one step above auto]

CPU GTL Reference (0) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (1) [-40]
CPU GTL Reference (2) [Auto]
CPU GTL Reference (3) [Auto]
NB GTL Reference [-40]
DDR2 ChA Reference Voltage [Auto]
DDR2 ChB Reference Voltage [Auto]
North Bridge DDR Reference [Auto]

CPU Configuration:

Ratio CMOS Setting [9]
C1E Support [Disabled]
Max CPUID Value Limit [Disabled]
Intel Virtualization Tech [Disabled]
CPU TM Function [Disabled]
Execute Disable Bit [Disabled]

Load-Line Calibration [Enabled, if disabled you may have to raise CPU voltage with 0,04v]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
As this is a starting point some voltage value may need to be alter later but at this point the goal is to boot into Windows and start to do some stability tests.

So start with the following, run Prime95 small FFT and if it runs without error for one hours you can bring down CPU Voltage one step and run it again for one hour, repeat until error occur, then you know you lowest CPU Voltage level, step up two steps and run it for three to four hour, if error free then you can focus on get the NB and those memory tune in.

I got this error after 1hour and 6 mins, I think this is a Ram Stability problem but im not %100 sure. I copied your template just 1 question is speed stepping enabled or disabled.

FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4

Any more help would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

@Hurtn4ASquirtn

You´re welcome, happy to help

If you run P95 small FFT and got that error you need to raise CPU voltage, start with one step up and run P95 again, if it passes one hour, leave it and let it run for at least for four hours, if you can´t reach four hours, raise CPU voltage once more by one step and repeat.

Check your temp with either Core temp or Real temp

When you got this error. what CPU voltage have you set in bios and what is it in Windows during idle and load?

Check with CPU-z.

Do you run Loadline Calibration disabled or enabled?

Intel Speed Stepping Tech should be disabled.
