Whats the best gaming cpu? - Page 5

But for future sake, the dual core AMD idea sounds the best since AMDs are already outperforming Intels with their own clock speeds (4800+ my god!). I think Intel is doing a good job, but AMD chips do run hot compared to Prescott chips...and northwoods just seem to be superchips at this point.

If you can find them, put in a search for 3.4 northwood into an eBay search and you'll get maybe 1 or 2 or them. The final price usually ends at about 250 though (I've been tracking a few). But it is "old" technology and the s478 board is getting phased out by s775 dual cores.

Summary:
-Photoshop needs lots of RAM
-Games need lots of GPU and some CPU (my CPU works harder folding than it does when I play games)
-The future of games is dual core processing (I've even heard talk of multi-cores [4 or even 8])
-Lowest heat is the Pentium Northwood series (being phased out)
-Best gaming overall is AMD

You might look into a different cooling system because the Zalman is very passive...and even though that makes it nice and quiet, it also makes it less effective...I've heard DangerDen makes a good setup, and Frozencpu.com is touting the new Apogee waterblock. But the Zalman does look good and is incredibly quiet and simple. It's all your choice, and I don't envy you with that hole your money is burning in your pocket.
Where are you getting your temperature information?? If i'm reading your thread correctly, you're stating that AMD processors run hotter than Intel? That's completely backwards if you are. I see you clearly state that the lowest heat is the Pentium Northwood series......umm...again,where did you get this information? Those run a lot hotter than any of the San Diego cores.

Well i have heard nothing but good about Zalman products.
As for the CPU fan ((478)) That would be your problem there. If you get the right hardware for your setup. You will be a happy camper.
As for the Over clocking. All systems are different. so with the right cooling and settings and hardware. I dont see any problems with you getting to 4.0

Now for the new CPU chip:
I was thinking of building a new system in about a year and the AMD FX57 has to be the best chip out there(($$$$))
By the time i build there will be other CPU chips out there that will be better and faster.

Well if you people here at o/c.net can help me.. This is what i am thinking to build for a system

Intel Pentium 4 3.4Ghz HT 550 (LGA 775) BOUGHT
2 x 200GB Sata Seagate HDD BOUGHT
DVD ROM DRIVE BOUGHT
DVD WRITER BOUGHT

So as you can see i have all of that but i need some of these babies:-

Silent PSU
Great Mobo
Graphics Card
Watercooling
Great Ram

So i picked out this:-

Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV (CA-005-HP)

Asus P5N32 SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi X16 (Socket 775) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-117-AS)

XFX GeForce 7800GTX Extreme XXX Edition 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-055-XF) OR

XFX GeForce 7800GTX Ultra Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (PVT70F-UDD7) (GX-052-XF)

Zalman Reserator1-Plus Fanless Water Cooling System - Black (WC-003-ZA)

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-092-CS) OR

Corsair TWINX2048-5400C4 (2 x 1GB) 2GB Dual Channel Pair (TWINX2048-5400C4)

Would that be a good setup? And would that zalman w/c support 4.0ghz 775 pressy like mine?

Ahh smart, go against all good advice and buy the crappy intel system JK but what you could have done was bought an Opteron 14x series with good stepping (Cabye I think) off of ebay for like 250$ US then bought phase change and got like 3.4ghz out of that beast. But oh well if you allready bought it... And the zalman is pretty good for a fanless watercooling setup, but it won't get you anywere near the performance of a good DD watercooling setup or Phase change (which is silent I believe) so... You could have waited a little longer... and got better information...

EDIT: for extreme ovreclocking get Geil One TCCD that stuff can easily reach 300mhz

No i already have it - had it for a few months i was thinking to change but if i did i would only get the 7800GTX 256mb and someone above did say about the new cpus next year...

I only need water cooling to make a stable and cool system at 4ghz

I'm saying the Opterons (which are underclocked FX-57) and they all reach 2.8ghz on water usually higher (someone at this forum got his to 3.2ghz on water (from 2.2ghz stock) and an FX-57 is equal to like a 4.2ghz Intel just to tell you. So a 3.2-3.4ghz Amd is equal to like 4.5 to like 5ghz Intel so they are really worth it if you could find A good stepping on ebay. And a Intel at 4ghz is still likely to bottleneck a 7800GTX 256mb let alone a 512mb(not necessary IMO)
