Can you setup part of the hardrive as system only?

I was wondering how to setup my hard drive where windows is the only thing on one partition and everything else goes to the other partition.

You could set up a hard drive in the way you are describing. The only problem I see with it is that some programs (MS office and Roxio come to mind) will install to no other drive than the C drive which is always going to be the partition you have installed windows to.

You will also need some amount of space for updates to windows, drivers, fronts, and the "Documents and Settings" folder (which is about 300MB on mine without the my docs folder).

So in short you could do it but I think it would be a pain and I don't see much benefit.

Are you going to format before doing this? If so, just setup a partition when installing windows of the required size and then set the second partition to be the rest of the space.

Well depending if everything else means programs as people have said.

If you want just your normal files, eg My Documents, thats easy.

You make the partition when you're reformatting the hard drive. So you'll have a smaller windows partition and the larger files partition. Then you go into the start menu, and right click My Documents folder and click the properties option.

Then choose the drive and folder you want your documents to be stored on.

I do that so I don't have to move my docs when I have to reformat.
