Try taking one stick out and seeing if it appears as 256 and then try the other stick on it's own. You could also try switching slots.

The motherboard that I have is a little older than yours and I had the same problem that you did. One day, my computer was running a little slower so I checked my system info and noticed that it said I only had 256mb of RAM installed. I thought that it one of the sticks died in it, but I was pretty busy that day and I had not gotten a chance to take it out and check it.

So, since I didn't check it right then, I forgot about it until a few days later. I checked the RAM in my system info again and it said that I had 512mb. I don't know what happened; perhaps something just wasn't right when booting up for a few days? Very enigmatic, my mobo is.

Completely remove both modules and check the contacts. If a film is on them, take a number 2 pencil and use the erasor to clean the contacts.
