This happened a fair bit when I installed the 5850 between my 4870 and sound card - I couldn't even get a decent overclock going before the temps soared past 80c and the PC rebooted.

So I had to place the 5850 in the top slow and add a couple 120mm fans over the pcie slots and now under 100% load the temps of my 5850 overclocked to 900/1050 hover around 65C

I can only imagine how difficult it would be with 3x 5850's though - maybe it's time for you to watercool them all

np at all. Much better then butchering your bracket man

Try mounting a high CFM 120mm fan directly in front of the gpus so it blows fresh air into the gaps between each of the cards. This works for me and dropped temps by 10C.

I need to get one of these to test everything lol.

So just so I undertsand correctly, your BOINC rig with 3x 5850's is only consuming 750w of power? That's awesome (kinda)

Did you do a test between each 5850 to see how much power consumption each extra 5850 added to the rig?

The case is open air (just metal grid)...and there's a 360mm fan on the front side. And no I didn't test in between - and now that it's running...I don't think I'd run that test until something bad happened...yes most I've seen thus far is 750....but it hovers between 600-750 as the cards cycle between wu's ets...about 150 watts per card extra when juiced.

Mind you 2 of the cards had their idle volts/clocks tweaked via BIOS screwing idle wattage...but the last one seems most efficient - and now I'm too scared to flash it....eventually the extra 35 or so Mhz will get to me and I'll break out RBE/Winflash (don't yell!)..and I'll go for broke.

Definitely crazy about the sandwiching effect......the top is still hottest - but everything seems to be where it should....

Cheers Gill

10.5 everything working fine.

I tried MSI Afterburner but must have got an old version, so when it said "graphics card not supported" I thought that was because it was non-MSI

Really nice program, might buy something off MSI.

upto 1.3v is safe, currently on 1.25v 1000/1200 x4 1:23 min wu on milky

Glad it worked out Blox!

Yeah, agreed Gamer - my HWmonitor won't register my unlocked 550BE correctly - maybe I'll have to give that program a shot....looks good!

I'm sure you will mate

With your 5850, sign up for dntec@home or milkyway@home and you'll be cranking out around 200K credits a day

Edit: Better make sure your 5850 is stable at that overclock though, BOINC will let you know quick smart if your overclock is not stable or your cooling is inadequate

Thanks man, that's is why I am here for, to contribute as much as I can to the world of distributed computing. And since my rig is slightly overclocked, I guess this is where I eventually found myself.

I am struggling between MW or DNETC though, one is really hardcore science stuff while the other just gives crazy loads more credits. You'll see me there time and time again.

So far its stable though, I crank down memory in MW to 650, temps stay ~70 degrees, thanks for the reminder

Why choose one or the other, sign up for both projects

If you set the priorities up right, they'll both get crunched each day.

FWIW, there isn;t much difference in points between the two projects tbh - on my 5850 I usually get around 200K a day for mw@h and 250k a day for d@h, so only around 50k a day difference.

It's also good to have a couple of projects going as projects always have downtime, so when one project goes down for a few days your rig will continue crunching the other project

np, I'll have to try dropping mem speed down and see if that helps temps

I have my 5850 set to 925/925 atm and temps are ~68C - but I don't have a side panel on my case, and I have a 120mm fan mounted directly over the GPUs, so I don't get a build up of hot air

Actually, in mw@h, temps are ~60C, it's only when crunching dnetc that temps move to ~68C - and that's with both projects at ~95% load, weird lol

Once I get a waterblock for the GPU I'll try run the gpu core closer to 1000

Too bad I only have 1 card to do both projects, unless I want my electricity bill to go off the roof

Not on my end though, I tried to count by the second on those 2 projects, MW gives ~240 pts on ~105 second runs, DNETC gives ~3100 pts on ~900 second runs. 2.29 against 3.44, a 50% difference, pardon me for being too technical

Yes, I read somewhere that MW doesn't use much the memory clock, proven it myself, no difference whatsoever. Not too sure on DNETC though.
