9800SE Cooling/Softmodding

Thread Starter
I have a 9800SE in my Dell Dimension 4400. The 4400 has decent airflow and keeps everything pretty cool.

Now I found a way to short the computer into letting me OC the 1.6 Williamette to a 2.0 Ghz, given that success I feel like I should try another task.

I want to add the Zalman VF700-Cu on my 9800SE with some Arctic Silver 5.

Would it keep it cool, and could I possibly softmod it to a Pro or XT?

That cooler might be a bit overkill for that card so you should probably get the ALCU version and save some money. Check this page to see if your card can be unlocked. If it cant be unlocked, you could still overclock it.

Well you have one and you Oced your 6600GT to 639 core...

As for the softmod, I beleive thats a negative.

Yeah I see I can't. But hopefully with the cooling and some AS5 along with some RAM heatspreaders I can have me a nicer Dell than before, I want to have it as a folding/server rig.

Can I pretty much get it to Pro or XT speeds with OC'ing?

Since you have half the pixel pipelines as the pro or XT you would have to get the core up to 824Mhz just to have it be at XT speeds. And I don't think that is happening anytime soon. But you might be able to get a little boost out of it.

I would go ahead and get the VF. After all, it's futureproofing, so in case you decide to buy a better card, you'll be all set.
