It seems that way Although I remember seeing other members with the i5 760 too, I guess they didn't want to join their own CPU club

I am building a new PC based on Intel LGA1156 processor. I want to get the maximum overclock out of it, so have ordered a EVGA P55 Classified 200 motherboard and G.SKILL F3-17600CL7D-4GBPIS memory. I have a Coolermaster HAF X case, and a Antec 850 watt Signature Series power supply. I plan on building a water cooled 360 mm radiator setup which I will dedicate to just the CPU.

I had planned on ordering an Intel Xeon X3440 processor, as they overclock well, and are about $100 less than an i7-870, but was advised by G.Skill technician that "the Xeon only allows a 10X memory multi, so your memory will only go as high as your BCLK. If you want DDR3-2400+, then you surely need the 12X memory multiplier for BCLK 200 x 12. The Xeon can not do BCLK 240 x 10."

So at this point, I am trying to decide between an i7-860 or an i7-870 processor. Pricing where I am is very similar (max $10 difference), and both come with a 12x memory multi , so it comes down to whichever one overclocks better. Any suggestions?

Unless you are doing a high overclock run with sub zero cooling i wouldnt bother with the 870. Only reason i would get it would be that they are binned slightly higher than the 860, this means it might use less voltage.

If the price doesnt matter go for the 870.

Don't forget a quality PSU to go with all that other highend stuff. X-650!! cough, cough.

I wouldn't let a lack of 12X Memory multiplier scare you off the Xeon. 12X multi won't do good things for stability. Even 10X @ or over 2000MHz you'll be sending enough uncore voltage threw it to make you cringe.

For $10 get the 870.

I believe Intel stopped manufacturing the i7 860, therefore the prices for the i7 870 dropped.

X2 when my 760 was purchased (about a month ago??) at my not so local Micro Center it looked like 750's were gone and not getting restocked. They still had some 860's that were selling for $10 less than the 870's but the 870's had taken over the 860's price point.

I purchasd an Antec SG-850 Signature Series power supply, which is about as good as it gets at the 850 watt level. I could have ordered something bigger, but saw no need for more power.

The power supply is reviewed here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...Story&reid=101

im planning on upgrading my cpu in my sig rig. I've looked at the best 1156 chips and I've narrowed it down between the i7 870 and 860. The pricing and performance is very similiar I was just wondering if there are any major differances that people have found out about the chips. I will be OC'ing it but i'm not the guy who OC's to the max to get every little point in a benchmark. What would you guys suggest?
