I have finally run Prime 95 for 11 hours to determine that my system is stable at current settings. Now I will lower the CPU voltage to see how low I can go and still be stable. Looks like one core hit 70C. Is that so high that it could cause damage?

By farwalker at 2009-12-05

Edit: Can't get Prime95 to run if I lower the voltage for more than 5 minutes.

Oh well, not to shabby.

I did find some indication that the i7-860 is designed to run up to 72.7C.

No, push higher. 72.7c is the maximum Tcase, which is not the same as the cores. I'm not a expert in that, chickeninferno/clockadille dundee can possibly explain it a bit better than I can.

Tcase is usually 10-20c lower than your cores. If you want to check your Tcase temperature, your motherboard temp. tool should tell you it under "CPU" and if you've got everest, it will be under CPU as well. (temperatures)

Oh, you can count me in as well.

I haven't really been able to do too much though, since I can't get my HDT-S1283 mounted correctly.

Notice the huge discrepancy in the cores.

I don't think I'm getting even pressure from my backplate, or maybe my IHS is warped(I don't think this is the case because I was getting fairly even results with the stock heatsink).

Either way I'm getting a new heatsink, likely a Corsair H50, because dealing with HDT and the angled 775 holes is just too much.

^^ the 775 mounting is a PITA, I had to drill a hole through my backplate for one of the socket backplate screws to pass through, then used some plastic washers to get even pressure.

for watercooling, yes. Air cooling works fine with the 775 mounts. My watercooler (crappy kti) doesn't fit on properly, too.

You should have got the 1156 mounting kit. I had the same issue with the backplate on the GTZ. I waited for a few weeks for an 1156 kit, but they never released one. I got impatient and just bought the XT.

The heatkiller isn't universal, different block for each socket So I would of needed a 775 backplate that was designed like an 1156, with the gap for the socket backplate etc. So I just used a re-threaded and modded thermalright backplate, works great
post #750 of 1646
I was under the impression that kits similar to these, made it possible to use the block with a different socket. I've never seen a heatkiller in person, so I don't really now. Either way, I can't find one for 1156.
