how do you have your drives setup?

this is common when grub has been installed to the mbr of the primary drive, and linux to a different drive (and then the linux boot drive gets moved or switched to another spot in the chain.)

try:

#which dbus
/path/to/dbus start

or if the above doesn't work
#updatedb &
#locate dbus | grep bin
start dbus with supplied path binary

then

#echo "exec ck-launch-session startkde" > ~/.xinitrc

#startx

He is not at a shell, he is still in grub, the bootloader. Basically he is not able to boot off of the live CD.

To the OP, do you get to a screen that has a large amount of boot options?
Something like this?

lol id just try pointing it to the kernal on the drive... if your on a live disc i would try something like "boot sr0" for your optical drive... or like "boot hd0,0" for your first hard drives first partition if thats where it is...

idk much about grub, but im assuming it wants the equivilant of a grub configuration line to boot up the OS... never had that problem with any live discs before lol

if you cant figure out the backtrack one, try blackbuntu, been playing with that lately, seems pretty nice for a more noob friendly pen-testing distro backtrack for pros still though
Kinda meh now...
