I currently have the HD5870, and love this card's gaming performance, and since folding tends to be a lot nicer (and higher PPD) for nVidia cards, I thought that it would be great to just use the 285 for folding. My current PPD on my HD5870 is only about 4k.
So could I do this setup, but install the 10,4's instead, having my main and only GPU connected to a monitor be the HD5870, and the GTX 285 as my only folder? Also, When I did attempt this with my 9800GT, I had wanted to put it in the upper PCIe slot, and my HD5870 in the lower, but I could not get my system to use the bottom PCIe slot. I would get no boot even though I had no monitors/tv connected to the 9800GT. How can I do this as well, since my HD5870 would have better cooling if it was on the bottom.
Shouldn't be a problem. Rather than follow this guide, try this first (might save a lot of time):
1) Install the 185 drivers
2) Install the GPU client (just one of them)
3) Add the -gpu 1 -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flags to the client
4) Run the client
If it worked, your 285 should fold while the 5870 will be fine.
