That's odd... you should only have 4 or 5. Chances are you got some nasty viruses.

You need to do a spyware and virus scan with the programs I listed.

Spybot search and destroy
Ad aware personal edition
AVG free edition

svchost are hardware i believe..

remove the spyware first, I personally use spybot (free) and spysweeper (free trial)

re-enable all of the processes under the services tab

then go to the start up tab and cutout the fat, thats where the majority of your problems are probably located. disable all processes that you know you do not need to have run every startup. im's for example are resource hogs and whatever else may be lirking in their application wise. If you know that you dont want it to run at every startup but don't want to hunt it down throw it in the quick launch bar (by dragging the shortcut onto it while holding alt.

then go to the system tab, check the hide all microsoft services and look through those for non-system critical garbage. video drivers, addon networking devices, antvirus, etc. appear in here so be careful what you disable. Then disable whatever sevices you feel you do not need.

I cannot stress how important it is for you to do your homework with google in finding out what is necessary for your system, what you want to run, and what you dont want to run. most of the legitimate microsoft services will be located in administrative tools>componet services>services section with a brief explanation of what they do. Take your time, and when in doubt leave it on. If you run into problems loading windows afterwards, boot into safe mode by holding f5 after post, then undo what you just did.

and no, just because you have 8 svchost running does not mean that you have viruses, it is a abbreviation of service host and runs whatever microsoft services you have enabled. I have a feeling the reason he has 8 running is because he is using win xp mce2005, if he disables some of the features within it that he does not use he will free up quite a bit of resources.

XP media os your using might of installed alot of services.

Did a lot more tweaking and got the system down to about 25 processes- I still have 7 instances of "svchost.exe running for some reason though. But 25 is a far cry from my original 64! Thanks for everyone's help.

I do spyware scans with MS antispyware, spybot and ad aware and I check for updates almost daily. I've run them all and all I get are negligible items. I'm positive my computer is virus free, and virtually spyware/adware free.

This website was outstanding when it came to identifying what some of those pesky processes were. When you run 'msconfig' and click on services, just type the service in question in the search bar on the top of the website and it gives you a pretty good idea if you want it running or not.

i have 15 processes running
go to "run" then type services.msc
disabling service they won't start up when ur computer boots
putting services to automatic they boot with computer, makking it really slow during bootup
putting services to manuel sometimes causes problems for certain services, they wont boot but will open when needed
you know when you boot your windows it has the little dot that does inside the bar with the windows logo on top? mine takes about 1.2 times then it goes in b/c i disabled most services
