Xfi.. worth it?

Thread Starter
I was wanting to get the X-fi elite pro.
And wanted to know if the nforce/xfi problem still exists for my mobo.
And the quality of the X-fi series.
And is BF2 surround sound?

BF2 is surround and actually has a sound quality setting called XFI that can ONLY be used if you use an XFI! Also all of the nF4 issues have been fixed but to tell you the truth, unless you get the Fatal1ty FPS version for its 64MB of XRAM, then go ahead and buy the Xtreme Music, they are all the exact same specs except the Platinum and the ELITE PRO come with a 5.25in bay thingy with a ton of knobs and IO ports. Your call, but I think its a HUGE waste of money. Considering the XM is on the EGG for about $120!

I can tell you for sure that an Audigy 2 is a big step up from onboard audio, and from all I've heard, X-FI is an equally large step up from an Audigy 2. If you want incredible sound and a bit extra in the way of performance (due to audio processing being unloaded from the CPU), either of those card lines will do you well. It just depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Well it seems the ExtremeMusic..
Doesnt have optical/coaxial?
Can someone confirm this?
And I dont want/cant plug anything into the front bays.
So its either the ExtremeMusic or the Elite Pro

I have the x-fi fatal1ty fps and love it. I currently had an audigy 2 zs. While I do notice a difference and love it, I wouldn't say it's as big as a jump from onboard to an audigy 2 zs. But it does sound much better. It's still way overpriced even though I bought it lol. However, I don't think the extra $120 from the fatal1ty to the elite pro is worth it. The Fatal1ty also has the driver bay thing and remote etc.

The Fatal1ty has 64MB of XRam onboard that non of the rest have, not even the more expensive Elite Pro....Also, all of the XFis have the same connections, atleast according to newegg and its pics, unless that is a connection that is on the 5.25in drive bay thingy that the XM lacks....can anyone confirm?

I went from ac97 onboard to an audigy 2 ZS and I didnt notice a huge difference but there's definately a difference.

I'm going to get the zalman 5.1 headset and I'm sure that I'll notice the difference when I get them because right now I'm just using a pretty cheap headset.

I dont think there'd be much difference between the audigy 2 ZS and the x-fi sound wise, but there definately is for encoding etc.

Thanks Tweako for clearing that up for me. I thought it was weird for the Elite Pro to not have what the cheaper model had but now I see that it DID indeed have the XRam. Which you don't need. So it doesn't matter. lol.

That's not correct, though. The Elite Pro also has 64mb of Xram. Keep in mind though that Xram cannot be used in anything unless the game is specifically written to use it and to date, no games are able to use it. I have the X-Fi Extreme Music and after learning to use it, I can say that it's a large difference over my Audigy. The 24bit Crystalizer is really nice for listening to old mp3s. Also, there's 3 different sound modes and music is GREATLY enhanced in Entertainment Mode over Gaming Mode. I'm not sure how the card "configures" itself as Creative states, but it most definitely does something worthwhile. Anyways, here's the best place to buy the Xtreme Music version from.....$103
