Need someone to read my faq real fast.

Just go over it and tell me what i did wrong and how to make it clearer(or try it.)

Question: How do I add more space to my C: drive without buying a bigger one and moving over to it?

Answer: Span it. Spanning is the process of taking a Basic hard Disk and converting to a Dynamic one so you can just spill over volume C: to a new hard drive.

There are 2 ways to do this: from command prompt or though the GUI (Graphical User Interface).
Example: Say you have a 20Gb with one partition (C: ) and its almost full. But you just want to add more space to it (C: ) and not move over to a new hard drive.
You do however have another 20Gb hard drive. So install the hard dive, hook it up to your mobo, and make sure it works.

Step one: Convert both drives from basic, to dynamic disks*. To do this go to the run box in the start menu and type in MMC. Go up to file and click add/remove snap in, or hit CTRL+M. Near the bottom of the Add/Remove Snap-in box click Add and select Disk management. Click finish on the next window, click close on the Add Standalone Snap-in window, and click ok on the Add/Remove Snap-in window. Now under Consol Root, there should be a tab labeled Disk Management. Double click it. Two new boxes will have opened up, one with the colums Volume, Layout, Type, File System, Status, etc…,
And the other, just below it, should show a visual of how much space you have left, its format and volume label.

The original hard drive you had in there will be labeled Disk 0 and the newer one Disk 1. Right click on the label Disk 0 on the bottom half and click convert to dynamic. In the select disks to convert box select Disk 0 Do the same to Disk 1.
And there you go your hot on your way to more space.

Step 2: Create the volume. Disk 1 should have all unallocated space. Right click the space and click new volume. Click next. Choose Spanned to create the spanned volume and follow the handy on screen instructions.

Step 3: Make sure it worked. By this time, you probably had a warning claiming that volume C: was running out of space. That warning should have gone away and when you open up my computer, volume C: should be much bigger(around 40Gb).

*Converting to dynamic disks does have its drawbacks. Like no dual booting, and if you want to go back to basic all info on the disks must be erased. But you can have up to 32 dynamic disks at one time(wow).

Next up, improving hard drive speeds with dynamic disks.

Not bad at all. Only thing I would suggest is add some screenshots showing the various screens, but thats about it.

It confused me mainly this bit

I do have a question however do i need to make a partition if i want to add an extra HD or will the comp just detect it automatically and allocate me the extra space ?

Well lets just say you have one partition on the origianal drive. the new drive will be just a large space with lines going across it saying unallocated. when you make the new volume and select span, it allocates all of the space to C:

Ahh so i need to go through this process to get the newer HD to work, also i was going to partition because I wanted like one part of the HD solely for games, one for my music, and one part of the whole space for general stuff like documents, windows, and other programs or would it be more efficient to have everything in one drive ?

well it doesnt really matter. you may get some better speed from doing it that way. but once your original drive fills up, all new info just spills right over into the new one. so at first the second half would be faster as it doesnt have to read as far into the hdd.

Well i currently have a 80gb HD but i was planning on buying a 500gb HD so i'd have 580gb and just transfer my mp3's movies to half of the 500gb and have the other half of that dedicated to my games and then have windows and other progs just on the 80gb HD. Would this be best option or would it be better to just scrap the 80gb drive & only have the 500gb one ?
