[FUD] 5870X2 is a TDP nightmare

We’ve learned that the current TDP for X2 is 376W and that the company is working on this issue, as apparently they will have to slow down the GPUs down by quite a lot to get rid of the heat.

LIES!!!

Seriously though, who cares if it's pushing upwards of 400w TDP? I'll take one anyway if they can keep idle consumption really low.

I'm tired of all these "news" articles I just want to see the damn cards out in the wild.

Does sound fishy to me considering Evergreen is much better with power.

If true that might make 5870 CF a more attractive option.

The trouble is that there is a 100% perfect conversion from electricity to heat, so that 400w will become 400 watts that need to be dissipated.

I agree though, I hate all these rumors; we really can't make any actual assessments until cards make it out to reviews, and reviews are released.

So a single card with its own memory only uses ~180w, but just adding a second GPU and a bit more RAM doubles the power requirements? That doesn't seem quite right to me, I know there's more things drawing power on the card than just the GPU.

The HD4870 only draws about 150w, but the HD4870X2 doesn't draw 300w (it uses an 8-pin and 6-pin connector, meaning that its maximum theoretical available power is 300w, a number that it's certainly not close to since engineers wouldn't allow things cut that close.

Well, we know the TDP of the 5870 is about 188W (source), so multiply that by two and you have a ballpark figure of where the 5870 X2 will be. They were able to have a TDP of 286W with the 4870X2, with the 4870 having a TDP of 160-180W. So, they'll come up with some power tweaks.
