My possible new AMD build, help please.

Thread Starter
I am (maybe) building my own PC completely from scratch for the first time. I normally get a PC then eventually upgrade it over time. I would like some help on any suggestions or needed changes to my build, in case any hardware will be incompatible with other devices.

I have pretty much everything there listed except for a PSU, which I would like a suggestion on. I also have not looked into cooling yet, but I will do that later. I have also not looked at DVD/CD drives, but I will also do that later. I didn't include a hard drive because I can pick one up on sale around here for about $30-$40 with 160GB-200GB, which is more than plenty for me.

Also, if any of you have any suggestions on anything that would be better for its price, please suggest it.

Here is what I have so far:

[EDIT]I have changed this to what has been suggested so far. Thanks to all who helped.

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego socket 939
$235.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103622

Motherboard:
MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Motherboard
$78.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130491

RAM:
G.SKILL Value Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel
$131.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231032

Video Card:
XFX GeForce 7600GT XXX 256MB PCI-E
$164.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150140

PSU:
Sunbeam NUUO 550W PSU
$79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817709004

Grand Total: $711.11, including shipping charges plus $30 or $40 for a Hard Drive. And maybe a DVD writer if my dad can't pick one up from work.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

buy a 3700+ san diego core cpu or an x2, also get the 6800gs, it is about 210 no rebate but much better than plain 6800.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130258 for the card

also the vbalue ram and top of the line dfi dont totally match. value ram is fine if your not gonna overclock but if your not going to oc then you may not really need that dfi for $200.

Thank you. Is the 3700+ San Diego better than an Athlon 64 4000+?

I was actually gonna get an Athlon 64 3500+, but my dad told me to go ahead and upgrade to as high as would be a reasonable price, like around $350, so I picked the Athlon 64 4000+.

By the way, I probably won't overclock. If I do, I won't do it until I have the time and the knowledge. I'm new to computer hardware...

Its not better than the 4000+ San Diego, its only 2.2 ghz.. But they will OC to about the same max. So just save yourself some money and go with the 3700 and OC it.

Well, I don't really know how to OC yet, I'm quite new to hardware. I might OC when I have some spare time and the knowledge, but probably not until school is out... then I might.

that 4000+ you had was a clawhammer core so it was a bit older and more expensive than it should be. do you plan to oc?

Its simple, you could get to 2.4 ghz really easily. On the startup on your computer, hold DEL and youll go into the BIOS.. Find the FSB and set it to 218, then find something called your "HT" or HT Multiplier, and set it to 4, save and exit and youll have the performance of the 4000+ in like 1 minute.. But in any case, 2.2 ghz is very fast anyways and all games you can play will play very good even with a 2.2.

lol, no, I don't know how to OC. I might eventually, but probably not soon.

But I think you're right, the 3700+ San Diego does seem to be better for it's price, it's over $100 cheaper and isn't too much slower. and I may overclock... I'll probably have to buy a good hs/fan though... that would be another $50-$60 for like a Big Typhoon or something...
