You'd never use that much. It won't do any harm having it there, it's just you won't be able to use the HDD space. I have 2GB of Ram and no page file and my system works fine.

I'd go with Ste's recommendation to test how much you need. I just tested mine by running Matlab (processing data for my thesis), Photoshop (looking at half a dozen hi-res textures I use for game modding), Azureus (downloading a 1.4GB torrent), Morrowind, plus firefox and some other things (tried running 3DSMax also but it's having issues). Memory usage peaked at about 1GB. So I think my 1.5GB page file is a bit overkill (cut it back to 768MB). I think the 1.5xRAM only applies when you have less than 1GB of RAM.

Also, you're supposed to leave it at a fixed value, right? Set Min=Max.

Yes, then Windows doesn't have to resize the Page File.

Are you using permanent page file ? Its when the minimum size of the page file is the same as the maximum, that way windows doesn't resize the page file all the time.

Edit : Oops I didn't see mako's post. sorry.
