Narrowed it down to 2 mobos and 1 cpu but need some advice please!

Hi,

I am just in the process of changing some bits in my pc. currently the system is like this.

xp2800 running at 2500mhz
ocz pc3200 rev 2 running at 200mhz
thermalright sp-97
enermax 431 psu
geforce ti4200

really, all i want to do is go the 64 bit route, and have narrowed it down to these parts.

athlon 64 3200
abit an8 or dfi lanparty ut nf4 ultra-d
thermalright si-120
and whatever el cheapo pci-e card i can get to fit (not a gamer so not really bothered on the specs of this)

have been looking at dual channel memory too, and have kind of narrowed it down to ocz platinum pc3200 / corsair pc3200 similar specs.

is 2.7 / 2.8ghz unreasonable for these bits? also how high fsb can the ram that i have mentioned hit?

i think thats all for now.

thanks in advance.

clunk

p.s. if you think there are better choices for the price, please say so

well list the prices then...

I would go with the dfi mobo. Look into memory rated at faster speed if you plan to overclock that much and don't want to run a divider/ murder timings.

And look around to see what other members with venice cores are getting out of them with air cooling, the seem to be a popular choice but by far the most poular choice is the 3700 with 1mb of l2 cache.

If you're on a strict budget, and looking for a certain level of performance, it may benefit you to spend more on your cpu and less on your other components. I think there is even 1 member in here who has a 3700 at 2.8 on stock air. Just consider all your options before you press the buy button lol.

If your on a budget, you can also go socket 754 with a 3700+newark, they can reach 3.0ghz on air.

thanks for the replies.

sorry, i agree that it would help if i put the prices!

bought a dfi nf4 ultra-d for a price i couldnt refuse so thats that out of the way.

ok rough budget is this.

i will have around £300 / $500 / €437 for memory and cpu. can go a little bit higher if needed, but not too much.

graphics card, as i said, is only being replaced because my old one wont fit in the new board.

also, i found some g.skill pc3200/4400 512x2 memory for £154. this seems cheaper than everywhere else by a quite a lot. also ocz pc2300 platinum is around £114 / $195 / €167. do you think the extra expense of the g.skill would be worth it?

ill be mainly using the pc for video encoding (using cinema craft encoder), audio editing, and general day to day stuff, so i will need it to be pretty much rock solid as it is now.

one other question is regarding the graphics card. i have found a xfx geforce 6200 for around £40. bearing in mind that i wont be gaming, would this be ok for general duties, when the rest of the system is overclocked?

sorry if they are obvious questions, but its my first 64bit system and the choices seem to be endless.

thanks

Thats really good memory, my buddy has some!

That gfx card should work fine! Just remember to lock the PCI bus.
