Hard Drive Suggestions

Thread Starter
Well, with X-mas quickly approaching, I need to tell my family what to get me . I'm going to be getting a hard drive, but I heard that the Hitachi Deskstar line isn't very good. I'm looking for a 100+GB, SATA2, 7200 RPM hard drive, with an 8MB cache. Also, I need it to be under 90 bucks before shipping. If anyone knows of a good hard drive with those specs, I'd be very pleased.

What is SATA2? Is it better then SATA, if so how? Does it need a special mobo or will it work with a normal SATA mobo?

Yeah, that's why I'm looking for different ones. I'll take a look at the Seagate, does anyone have any other suggestions?

You can a 250gb maxtor DM10 with 16mb of cache for 90 some bucks I think. Its a bit more, but its a kick ass drive. I think there are also 200 gb models that are the same.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822140168 87 bucks but not in stock right now

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144235 99 bucks

Either are fast hard drives. SATA II doesn't make a difference because no hard drive out there in your price range uses 1.5 gb/s let alone 3 gb/s. There are some scsi's that might, but no SATA drives

Okay, I still can't decide. I still want SATAII, for under 90 bucks now. Suggestions?

Sounds like a good deal. Anyone had experience with these hard drives?

I have owned 4 Seagate Hd's and never had a problem with any of them, as far as i know, it will be the only brand that i will buy for now and in the future, except for the Western digital raptors.

As for the question of difference between SATA I and SATA II, it is in the bus speed, 150 vs 300 but, SATAII is limited mostly by read and write speeds.
