Do you really need a sli bridge?

Thread Starter
I called XFX tech support a while back and they stated that for 2-way sli you don't really need a SLI bridge with the newer Nvidia Drivers although it it suggested to regulate voltages if you are overclocking. How factual is this?

Also does this include 3-sli so you won't need to bridge???

I ask because with my bloodrage I need to do some serious finagling with pci-e risers and placement of cards in various slots to activate 2-way sli + physix or 3-way sli + physx so it's either no bridges or custom bridges (which i have no idea where to even start)

Please let me know if you have any benchmarking or facts to support to XFX guy's claims, thanks

Wow... I'm sure that you need an SLI Bridge, that's the first I've ever heard of it, I really wouldn't listen to the man.

As for with Tri-SLI, sometimes having the 3rd bridge in helps with Vantage scores, apparently.

Yea, it will work without one, however, you loose a lot of performance, because it is a lot faster to transfer the information for SLI through the bridge rather than the PCIe lane.

Also, for Tri-SLI is suggest that you use one because that requires a lot more bandwidth on the PCIe lanes compared to dual SLI, making the bottleneck much more noticable.

umm, last i checked you need a bridge to SLI (for 2 cards to communicate)
There is a bridge EVGA makes and it leaves the 3ed PCI slot for a single slot card (9800gt, 9600gso, etc) and the SLI bridge skips that card. I'll edit my post in a bit with a link in a few mins. i just woke upp, and saw this thread! LOL. so i dont confuse you this is what the SLI bridge does (i used GTX 280s and a 9800GT as an example)
280 280 9800GT 280

so now all 4 of your PCI-E 2.0 slots are used up and the 9800GT is skipped by the bridge and is used for physx.

oh i found a good example from another thread. LOL
put your Physx card in the black slot in your bloodrage and get the 3-WAY SLI bridge and your bridge will skip the black slot!

Yes sir it is. just don't use an SLI bridge and go into the Nvidia control panel and select the 260 for physx.
