4890 - Low FPS in CSS - Page 3

Call it 40fps improvement, there is a CPU limitation present in Source and I'm betting an over clock would increase your performance. I know it's only 40fps extra in my case but your system might react better and give a higher FPS gain or on the other side of the fence it could give very little gains.

Just try it
This seems prettty weird.

3.0GHz - 355.52fps (1.22vcore)
3.2GHz - 339.44fps (stock 1.2750vcore)

any other ideas? I used the exact same settings and ran the tests 3 times :/

I also noticed last night that when I turned my PC off, my keyboard's numlock stayed on, could there be a power leak, and if so, could this be causing my low fps problems?

Dan

EDIT

I will continue to edit this with the max and min fps (measured with fraps and built in fps counters) I get on certain games @ 3.2GHz:

GRID Max - 114
GRID Min - 81

CSS Max - 120 (while playing, 328 in the pitch black on spec)
CSS Min - 50 (for the map I was on)

That sounds weird. I can play CSS with my GPU on idle clock of 507/500 and it never dips under 60. I do notice about 50 FPS of difference when I clock my CPU to 3.2GHz from 2.66. As the guy said before, CSS is very CPU dependent. If anything, I'd get the CPU checked out or play the game with a different GPU if you have one and see if it actually gets better steady FPS.

It sounds like your Q6600 isn't stable at 3Ghz, 1.2Vcore??

Did you run prime95 for 24hrs? Or 30 instances of Linx/Intel Burn Test?

I think it isn't stable and it's throttling back, try upping the Vcore and checking again, if the frame rate does go up then you need to re-check your over clock as your Q6600 is being voltage starved.

Is there a Speedstep issue? Put your computer in High Performance under Power Options.

Just got my Coolermaster V8 installed & getting -5 degrees compared to my Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, so I will try 3.4 soon

Core2 still seems to be the coolest though, I think the CPU surface isn't very straight as it was like that on my AF 7 Pro, not much I can do about that until I feel comfortable sanding £125 of my money =[ (seeing as im accident prone with electronics haha)

I haven't had any time to run prime95 for 24 hours but it was fine for about 2 hours after I OC'd it.

The stock vcore is 1.2750v, but it would run at 1.2v easily on 2.4GHz, so I will set the vcore to 1.3 then 1.32 etc and see if it makes a difference, thanks again for trying to help me out, much appreciated

I turned that off in my BIOS so It shouldnt be, I have my own custom power options on XP to hibernate my pc off after 15 minutes & I've never had any problem with it before, thanks though

So Im still having this problem and have narrowed it down to either the CPU or GPU and would like to ask you guys something.

Is there any way to test if my CPU (only cpu) is underperforming? and if so how would I go about doing it?

And is there any way to check that my GPU is underperforming without moving it to a different PC (as my 4890 wont fit in my bros pc without some sawing haha)

Download and run 3D Mark Vantage and post the results...that'll tell us if there's a problem with the hardware..

Ahhh, I really need some help soon, Im starting to think its either my mobo, cpu, or graphics card (or psu)... but Vantage doesnt work on XP and I have no access to Vista >.<

My bro was on the same CSS server earlier with his setup (Q6600 [2.4GHz], EP45-UD3R, 2GB 1066mhz OCZ Reaper RAM & a HD 4830), in exactly the same spot, speccing, and he was only getting 20fps under me, which is rediculous, I paid about £120 more than him to gain 20fps? this cant be right

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far
Dan
