Memory for AMD64 4000+ recommendations?

Thread Starter
Hi guys I have a San Diego AMD64 4000+ and Asus A8N-SLI board.

The memory im going to buy is 2GB preferably 2 DIM package.

can anyone recommend a package i will be buying from this inventory.

http://www.pccasegear.com/category186_1.htm

Is it true that when you go to 2GB x 2 instead of 512MB x 4 the performance, overclock ability and latency will be degrated ?

Thanks guys.

well you can run tigher timings with 4x512 but it will put more stress on your motherboard when overclocking comes. I would say get http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2891.htm that, it is decent for the value, and will probably OC better than 4x512, but the timings are loose. Also it depends on how much you want to spend. Also i wouldnt get PC3200 memory if your going to OC...

Thats good memory it should work good, you won't lose much with this when overclocking, 4 sticks is a strain on the memory controller.

I was seriously considering those. But what about these they are tighter timings. Say i decide not to overclock but want the best possible performance which would you pick.

1. http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2893.htm

2. http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2891.htm

Is my board a good overclocker Asus A8N-SLI ?

Thanks

Being realistic, 2x1gb will perform better than 4x512 because the all 4 memory modules will stress out your motherboard.

Gskill makes some really nice ram, it should overclock just fine. You will most likely be using a divider if you wish to obtain really high fsb clocks.

Thats some nice value ram and it should over clock just fine
Good luck!!

EDIT!***
I am still recommending #1 because it uses Hynix D5 chips so you will have a pretty good overclock and tighter timmings.

I would still go for the pc4000. if your not overclocking you can tighten them up plus if you decide to overclock you will have them. Thats a pretty good motherboard.

Thanks for your input guys im still undecided though. I hate that their is so many memory products and configurations to choose from. Im leaning more towards No1 though.

You are correct about there being many options for memory and what really is best.

You have some givens which will narrow down your choice.

Asus A8N-SLi MB:

- This must run 2T for any stability esp at 235+ so whether you have 4 or 2 modules is not going to matter too much. Yes the IMC has extra load but this is not a major concern.

- Max HT (FSB) on these MB is around 310, then the SATA controllers start to drop off .. but 300 is a good target to aim for.

- CAS timing is not that important - CPU speed is and then max the memory out and with 1Gb modules these work best at CAS 3.0

- Max Vdimm is 3.0v .. this could be the area that causes the 1Gb modules the most issues as getting them to run high 260+ up to 300 in some cases needs Vdimm of 2.9-3.0v so get the meter out and measure your PSU and oltages for stability plus true ratings.

So what to choose ... given the availability of 1Gb modules and also the benefit that 2Gb offers to apps over all - I would now seek the 1Gb out... and get the best that can fit into the budget. 4x152 modules of equal performance would more than likely cost you more as well.
