reformatted my HDD

Thread Starter
I reformatted and reinstalled win xp without SP2. With a firwall on I Still having problems with connections to the Internet and soul seek. If i turn off the firewall soulseek works great but i get these pop ups telling me my windows Registry is corrupted. Everything works great on my Compaq computer (2nd system)…...could i have a bad copy of windows?

This is a ongoing problem since i built this system (specs below)

No...........With SP2's Firewall you'll need to make exceptions. If you feel you need a Software firewall disable windows firewall and download a freeware like Sygate or Kerio. Before that get yourself Adaware and Spybot and scan your machine with current definitions. That pop up window about your Registry being corrupt is Spyware - not a windows warning.

Are you running a router? If so then you can safely turn windows xp sp2 off. When you run a router, it intercepts all traffic with the exception of outgoing and ports that you designate to allow through. If you don't believe me then do a security test on DSL reports with a program like windows xp sp2 firewall on, and then turn it off while using the router and do the same test. Its just redundant to have the firewall on. IMHO.

Firewall aside, that's pretty well covered...

Do I read you correctly that you are getting popups on a fresh install of Windows? That's not good. Did you have antivirus and antispyware running while you were connected to the Internet without a firewall running? If not, you may be compromised again already.

If you were protected though, then a corrupted registry on a brand new install is a Bad Thing. I would start wondering if part of the drive was going bad. It has happened to me before, I had to do a full reformat and surface scan before installing yet again. I have also had problems with new installs that resulted from simple heat problems, i.e. moving the PC to a more ventilated area solved the issue.

You're talking about the messenger service then, it sounds like. There is definitely a lot of spam that comes across the wire on that service. It goes away with the firewall turned on because the incoming port is blocked.

The service is actually turned off by default in newer CDs with SP2 included I believe, and installing SP2 turns it off if it was on. But if you reinstall with an original WinXP CD or recovery disc, then yep, that sucker comes back. Definitely turn it off, it serves no useful purpose.

I found the problem, when I reinstalled windows I did not disconnect from the Internet.
As soon as I did the reinstall while i was disconnected from the internet all worked out fine.
I did however uninstall win SP2, I din't like it at all. i just run norton and spybot.
