nicely done. hyperthreading needs to be off unfortuantely to get it anywhere, mine wouldnt break 4 until i turned it off, now its doing quite nicely. im hoping to hit 5.0 soon...

There is not such thing as that i7 860 Processor has less bandwidth compare to i7 920 Processor.

x58 chipset = CPU talks to x58 chipset (Host Controller) through qpi link, and then dmi link to the ICH (or South Bridge if you want to call it)

p55 chipset = cpu talks to itself (Host Controller) and then dmi link to the ICH (or South Bridge if you want to call it)

I wouldn't call it "QPI" Bus I would rather call it Quad System Bus, and it is on both x58 and p55 or i7 920 and i7 860. QPI "Link" however is with x58 chipset.

Who said i7 860 don't have QSB 7.2GT/s ? I am currently running it at QSB 7.2GT/s on my i7 860.

i7 860 native Quad System Bus is at 4.8GT/s
socket LGA1156 is also newer with more transistors.

The only differences are that x58 allows two 16x PCIE Graphics Cards Configuration whereas p55 allows two 8x PCIE Graphics Cards Configuration. Single Card Configuration all run at 16x PCIE.
And x58 allows Triple Channel Memory Configuration whereas p55 allows Dual Channel Memory Configuration.

This might be a completely noob question. But the OP stated his temps at load were around 80C. Isn't that bad for this chip? Or am I mistaken? I have the same chip and I was trying to figure out what temp ranges I should be at for the safety of my chip. The different ratings they give on the intel site state Tcase or what not. I don't know what that is exactly or if it is relevant, possibly the air temp in your case not sure.

Tjmax of the i7-860 is 99 degrees celcius.
For short term testing like in benchies its not to bad to get close to those temperatures.
I have tryed to read alot on internet about it but so many people give so many different awnsers.
The guy that made the program real temp sayed as long you dont hit Tjmax u are safe.
What i would do to the lifetime of the chip i dont know.

My system runs @ 4209mhz with HT on
on normal days its get to 84 degrees celcius during heavy cpu stress [LinX]
on hot summer days like now i have reached up to 94 degrees even.
Never had any errors yet and it runs like this for some time now.

Hope to get a new chip soon to test that Tjmax thing from realtemp with, as for now i am to scared to constantly bring it over 90 degrees. with 80 degrees Ã* feel safe.

Use the Asus on board OC program, Turbo Evo. I have mine at 3.7 and its very stable.

The EPU-6 engine program allows you to manually step down the cpu when your surfing or downloading. Use the programs with confidence.

Yeah I was thinking of using it but the default temp on PC probe was set at 60c. I saw my chip get up to the 70s and into the 80s when I had it around 3.9. I only ran it for a split second because I saw the red from PC probe and I honestly don't know what the temps should be. So I figured it would be best to do some looking around. I didn't want to wreck my chip. Is the asus temp software pretty accurate? Or should I grab something else?

here is a piece from a post the maker of reall temp has made. :

The 73C number in the Intel specs is not a core temperature rating. It's a TCase rating which is measured at the geometric center of your IHS after you cut a groove into your IHS and mount a thermocouple. That number is designed for system builders that want to make sure their selection of case fans, etc. are OK and is not designed for the average end user. When running a high stress program like Prime95, it's not unusual for the hottest spot on the core to be a good 25C higher than the TCase temperature so your actual TCase temperature is still well within spec when running Prime. That also gives you a good idea of how quickly heat dissipates.

The only temperature you need to be concerned about is your core temperature. Thermal throttling where your CPU slows down and thermal shut down are both based on your core temperature. Your CPU won't start to thermal throttle and slow down until a core temperature of approximately 99C. If it is below that number then it is running within spec and at full speed.

The shut down temperature isn't until a core temperature of about 125C so even though 99C seems like a really big number, you're obviously not going to hurt anything. If Intel thought this was a problem, they would redesign these things and lower the thermal throttling and thermal shutdown temperatures.

The whole point of the 72.7°C thermal specification is that even when you are running the most demanding programs like Prime95, if the TCase temperature is under this temperature then the hottest point on the core should still be under the 99C thermal throttling point and a user won't have to worry about his computer slowing down.

Intel knows that the majority of their customers are more concerned about how quiet their computer is and not the core temperature while running Prime 95. That's why they include a heatsink that is light (cheap to ship a few hundred million of them) and quiet to keep customers quiet. All I care about is stability. If you are overclocking and your computer is running 100% stable and you are not thermal throttling then you can pretty much ignore your core temperature. That's why I included the OK word in the thermal status area of RealTemp. Can't get much simpler than that. If it ever shows the word LOG then that means at least one thermal throttling episode has been logged and if it ever shows the word HOT then that means thermal throttling is in progress. If it says OK then no worries and you can overclock some more as long as you continue to run stable.

hope this help you understand temperatures on cpu's a bit

I am not sure about which batches of 860's are the better ones.Mine is from Batch - L921B884T .Does anyone know if this is a sour batch ???? Because I just bought a New EVGA Board ,due to not being able to achieve anything Higher than 3.5 on my Intel board. I seem to have pretty bad luck .
