but what you need is 1.4+ VCore, RAM to be rock solid, and 1.375 QPI.. upwards 1.4 PCH..
2.075 PLL..

What is the highest bclk your CPU posted @? mine goes about 234 before it stops posting.. (does it work @ 200, that could be a good indicator for hope )

also dude, got a steam account? I' think i've got overclocking this chip from top to bottom down! i could help you out easier via steam

cheers
Hey Fox, was that 4.2 Ghz OC with HT enabled?
I'm trying to get stable with my OC @ 4.2 ghz but it looks like i need to push my Vcore well beyond 1.5v

May i just got a bad chip

thanks,
Glandoux

thanks,
I recently turned on HT, that was the first time I tried overclocking it. I needed upwards 1.46 for 4.2 with HT on to be rock stable. Although I keep it @ 1.42 and its stable enough for benching.. I'm selling my 860. I bought a overclocking board and stuff and All i got was 4.2 GHz. How can I destroy overclock a chip that doesn't go over 4.2?

the i7s 8XXs fail to get over 4GHz easily, so no you don't have a bad chip. You just don't have a great chip.. And neither do I. Maybe the new stepping revision will improve the chips

Ok, so at least i know my chip is not worst than any other i7-8xx yet..

Actually, i was able to OC @ 4.2, but that was with HT off

With HT on, the max i get is 4.1 Ghz, still not bad.

Also, the temps are a lot higher when HT is on.

Dammit.. i shoud've got the i7-920

4.1 is still amazing with Ht on but what are the idle/load temps like at that speed?

I got the H-50 corsair liquid cooler.
My idle temps are 40 and my load temps are 79, so i think it is fine.

Maybe it isn't ideal for benching, but benching isn't fun anyway (yeah right).

That OC will do anything you want, think about it. The difference is incremental.

Besides, if you bench with it, it isn't as common of a cpu, which is good in it's own way (as far as competition.). At least, that is my latest rationalization.

yea 100MHz isn't quite worth it unless you're asking for those extra 60 3d mark vantage points.
