How risky would it be to try and use better thermal paste on this?

My card has a unique heatpipe solution. It gets so hot it will burn you, but with active cooling it's actually quite cool. If they use a thermal pad from the factory, then I figure it could really help temps if I use some of my AS Ceramique in its place.

How easy is it to kill a GPU core?... I really don't want to do this if there is a high chance of ruining it.

i wouldent think there would be a high chance of ruining it as for the Core it will slow down once it geets to hot anyway and should stop it from being burnt out.

All i say is take a few snap shots as you go along just to check where everything came from

It isnt that easy, their threshold is like 155c, so I dont see any problems happening, people do it all the time.

Well depending on how it comes apart it won't be a problem, it say's that it was never ment for the end-user, so my guess is that its pretty hard to take off/put back on. Just be careful and remember where everything went and it should be ok.

It would work and most GPU's are good to around 90c but as you know it's best to keep it under. The only concern really when you use the paste versus the pad, is making sure the parts contact. If I was you I'd put some on and install the cooler, and then remove it again to make sure you are getting a nice even spread. If there is good contact, then clean off the area and reapply the thermal paste to eliminate the possibility of an air bubble in the paste. I've tried this with the RAM on my video card and unfortunately it didn't work too well, so I had to stick with the pads.
