Will Cat6 Cable be a good upgrade over Cat5e??

Thread Starter
I recently ran a Cat5e cable to the second floor of my house to upgrade over wireless. The connection is better, but i play BF2 online alot and when BF2 is the only thing opened it plays fine. But i use a program called Ventrillo that runs outside of BF2 that let's me talk to my clan while playing BF2. For some reason when i start an online game with Ventrillo connected, my ping jumps up all the way to like 1000 and the high hundreds. Could Ventrillo really need all that power? Cuz when i Alt-Tab out of BF2, and disconnect and exit ventrillo, and go back to the game it plays flawlessly. Could a Cat6 cable help me out here?

The Cat5e cable i have is kinda skinny. I have another cat5e(not as long as i need it) and it's a bit thicker than the one i'm using. Should i try going with a name brand Cat5e cable? or jump strait to Cat6? If i got Cat6, would i need to upgrade anything to get the full effect of up to 1000mbps?

That all depends on your router, if it says link speed is 10/100/1000 then cat6 will work, but cat6 can work at either of those speeds, so make sure it says 1000.

I don't really think so, most internet connections will never run over 10 Mb/s, so you're limited first by your ISP, then your modem, and then cabling.

when i had the wireless setup, it worked, just not the way i wanted it i.e. it lagged a crap load. So i ran a Cat5e cable so i could get a better connection. The connection IS better, but still not where i'd like it to be.

Yes, but typically one plays BF2 over the internet, but a LAN is also possible. I doubt he's playing over a LAN, just over the Internet. Gabe, talk to your ISP and ask them what their advertised speeds are, both download and upload. Then, see how much more expensive a speed upgrade is.
