Iv'e heard that intel is working on a fiberoptic CPU. Anyone hear about that too? If so, do you know when it is planned for released?

Being only a layman enthusiast, I'm forced to ask: What is a fiber optics CPU?

I know there are tiny things called transistors inside current CPUs and pretty much any chip... is that the difference?

Optical CPU? There might be some R&D for it but there nothing even close to market by Intel for at least 5 years.

A CPU that uses light instead of electricity.
Light on = 1
Light off = 0

Some advantages are:
1) faster propagation
2) No voltage leakage
3) No interference... you can have two light beams cross and they won't affect each other. You can't do that with wires.

Fibreoptics is the transfer of light instead of the transfer of electricity. Current CPU's transfer electricity. I don't beleive that transisters will be needed in fibreoptic CPUs, but something simmilar might be used.

I wouldnt believe that a fiber optic cpu would be all that small. I dont see it making a way into personal computers for a couple hundred years

If you imagine fiber optic wires the size of FiOS cabling, then you're right; no CPU could be made of that stuff, but believe that there are more compact ways of engineering these structures.

Speed of light = ~300M meters per second
Speed of electricity = ~ 1/3 meter per nano second

I'm to lazy to do the math right now.


To the OP: I've been hearing that Intel has been working on it for about 5-6 years now. While it would amazing to get this technology, I doubt we'll even be hearing of R&D Alpha steps for another 20-30 years.

A transister is just a type of switch. I know that microscopic optical switch are being developed.

Why not? We have electricity based CPUs that small.

The benefit isn't just the propagation speed but it is a benefit. Electrical signalling is 66-95% speed of light.
