Sli or no Sli

Thread Starter
I am building a comp, is it better to get a sli enabled motherboard, and get to 128 cards, or to get a sli mobo and get one 256meg card, and add another later, whcich will work better right now? Or what about totally forgetting about sli, what games need sli that re coming out soon?

sli board is good as an option but buying two inferior cards now is a very bad idea. just get one of the best cards you can afford now and either replace with new or add sli when it struggles. 7800gt is about $310, 6800gs is about $210. get one of those.

oh yeah, NO SLI!

well no games need sli to run, but almost all games will benefit from sli. Even games that are not specifically made to work with sli can receive a benefit if you manually make a game profile.

It depends on what cards you are looking at purchasing.

For example one 6800GT will perform about the same or a little better than 2 6600GT's in SLI.

If you still want to get 2 cards right now for SLI without spending an arm and a leg I would suggest the 6800GS. it performs about the same as a 6800GT and only costs about $200. So you can get 2 cards for about 400.

If you want performance I would suggest you get a 7800GT and then you'll have the option to add a second one later. Or you could wait a little while and get a 7800GS. it performs inbetween the 6800GS and 7800GT and should cost somewhere aound $250 or so when it comes out.

What works better will largely depend on what you want to do and how much money you have to spend.

if you want games then go AMD. let us know what you're looking at and then we can give you better advice.

If you do go AMD, then try to get an opteron while you still can. They are quite cheap and o/c very nicely. Try to get a CABYE or CABNE stepping if possible but even most of the CABGE's can reach 3Ghz on air.
If you Go Intel then the 820/830 are nice chips, mobutu16 managed 4Ghz on his P5LD2/830.
