does it matter which way the processor is put into the socket or can it be put in any way as long as it goes in without force

It absolutely matters! Be sure to line up the processor appropriately, or you risk severe damage to your components.

Fortunately, it's pretty easy to tell which way processors go. There's ususally a distinct mark (e.g. gold arrow) that lines up with a distinct mark on the processor socket. Also, mobo manufacturers generally "dummy proof" sockets so they can only go in one way (this was not always the case as I found out the hard way with an old 486 ).

Yes! Look at the pin array on the bottom of the proc, and match it up with the PGA socket. also, there are arrows!
