Console Graphics card Question

Thread Starter
What kind of cards go in consoles, like ATI what they put in the XBOX360 and NVIDA in PS2? They just heavily modified versions of X1800's and 7800's?

And how much memory they put in them? I’m pretty sure I seem the XBOX360 has only 512MB in it so how’s it making things look so good is it just because the processors? Or a special type of memory?

The PS3 has the "RSX". Its a 90nm 7800GTX. The Xbox360 has the R500 in it. It has 48 unified shaders <(newer technology). The Revolution has a modified R520 core with 32 pipelines..

I believe the 360 has an ATI R520, it's essentially an IGP adapter built on to the motherboard, only much stronger. I believe Sony is going with a version of a nVidia GPU for it's PS3.

Xbox360 has an R500 graphics chip, this is based on the R520 but has 48 unified shaders, that is shaders than can either be pixel pipelines or vertex shaders, also it has 10MB of DRAM embedded for Anti Aliasing and as a frame buffer, for texture memory it has to share the 512MB of ultra fast GDDR3 700MHz with the CPU. The PS3 has an NVIDIA RSX which is a modified G70 core but beyond that, I don't know any of its specs. It is speculated that this chip is SLIGHTLY slower than the R500 XENOS in the Xbox360 but the CELL CPU in PS3 is designed to help it out if needs be, so it still remains to be seen which of the two consoles is faster. Nintendo is TOTALLY silent on their N5 "Revolution" however they said it is merely 2-3x as powerful as a GameCube, so expect Nintendo fanboys to continue their "Its not graphics, its gameplay" propoganda. Im kidding lol!

EDIT/// Jori pretty much has the same info as me but more on the N5 and PS3.

I'm not into consoles anymore and won't buy any of them, but I'll second the opinion that the best hardware isn't the victor. The victor is the machine with the FUN games.

And the R500 is not based on the R520, the you either make a Unified Shader architecture, or a Pipelines/Vertex Shader architecture.. The G80 is a totally new architecture, they cannot tweak the cores they are using right now to have unified shaders.. Just to clarify that.

The Cell processor is rumored to be extremely hard to code with, while I have heard that coding games for the X360 is relatively simple.
