Heya,

Does anyone have any idea whether or not ATI has any plans to do any sort of firmware/driver setup to allow the 5000 series to use multiple monitors (3+) without being required to use display port? That just seems silly on their part. Their diagrams show that all the channels can display, so why did they make it absolutely require display port? Based on those diagrams of the channels, seems to me that they could just enable it to work via DVI, DVI and HDMI for 3 displays on any of the 5000 series. Is there rumor/news of them trying to update it so that display port isn't an absolute requirement? It wouldn't be so bad if it were not for the freaking $100 adapater--that's just stupid, I'd rather buy a whole new monitor than spend that much on an adapter because at least I can use the monitor for a lot more after I get something else later down the road, where as an adapter is absolute trash after you're done using whatever required it (and seems to me that everything in the future is wanting to move to display port... very, very slowly).

Here's hoping we can either get a) cheaper adapaters, or b) some kind of firmware/driver update to allow triple monitors without using display port.

Edit:

Ok, so after watching that HardOP review, they said ATI told them specifically that they're working on getting a display port adapter certified working with a 3x DVI setup, which is what we all need who do not have a display port monitor/tv. I for one use HDMI (primary tv), and two DVI monitors for my tri display. So an adapter is needed for me. I'm glad ATI is saying they're going to work on getting an adapter out fast. That means others will try to do it, with generic brands. And that means lower prices. I'm just waiting to see a non-$100 adapter. Like $20~30 is totally cool with me. So I'll watch to see it get released. Then I'll get a 5850 and overclock it. The only other thing I may wait on, is the 5850x2 if it gets made, and what price it will be, since a dual GPU card with eyefinity can actually make use of the dual GPU where as it doesn't work with crossfire.

Very best,

They mention something about that in this review.

Yea there's a few things to be ironed out, but I see this as a way better solution than a triple head to go. I'm sure with the official release of the 9.10 drivers we'll see some improvments

for those thinking of a 3+ monitor setup, have you considered removing the bezel entirely? I took my old 17" non widescreen out of its shell (tinkering purposes) and realized I could mount another directly beside it and it be nearly seamless.

although I would hate butchering a 22"+ widescreen for such a thing <_<

get a monitor that supports displayport lol

The Dell 2408WFP 24-inch (61 cm) Apple's LED Cinema Display, and HP's LP2275w, LP2475w, and LP2480zx monitors also support DisplayPort.

Heya,

This is something I'm actually considering seriously. I'll wait a while to see how the hardware develops with its software. But regardless of Eyefinity, I've already been using 4 displays on my current machine. I'd love to take a few screens and disassemble them and put them really close together. Make a new frame from plexiglass perhaps. A little line is easy to deal with (I can deal with the bezel as it is). But just having one big 6" wide screen at 5760x1080 would be sweet. I currently have three displays at 1920x1080p each setup and my 4th is just there if I want to keep something in view while using the 3 displays together (like tri-display gaming but still seeing some web sites on my 4th). Depending how Eyefinity changes over the next 6 months or so, I'll consider getting some more 23" 1080p LCD's and see about chopping them up and making my own display. It'll be 48:9 ratio, haha.

Very best,
