2 Questions: the SLI bug and cooling 7800GT's

Well I'm looking at more and more reviews and yet to decide on a graphics card. I'm seeing that the GT has some pretty impressive numbers compared to stock GTX's and the SLI bug hit me again tonight.

I originally thought of the 7800GT SLI option but then some people mentioned future upgrades to get 1 GTX and then another GTX later. It sounded good at the time and still does but I'm not sure that I'll be wanting to spend $350-$400 on a another graphics card within the next year when I can get (a hopefully) bug-free Xbox 360.

So, I got about $600 to spend (from a project) that I mentioned in another thread and want to use it on somethign that I would otherwise *not* buy. I'm intending on getting a X-finity 600W PSU because I need to power these bad-boys. I know the GT's in SLI will kill 1 GTX and I know it will be playable for some time to come until I graduate get a job and start making money.

MY other question is if I were to go the 7800GT route I want better cooling for the card. I know the eVGA GTX can allow their ACS cooling but can the eVGA GT's benefit from them too. I mean it's the same board/GPU so I would think it could work...has anyone tried this, or have to all used other methods to cool. I'll want to keep the cards as cool as possible and dont mind paying extra to keep them cooler. I want to be able to OC them a little not much for now, but eventually push them pretty far.

yeah 7800 gt's are nice, and they will last for about 3-4 years (in my opinion) because while games can have better graphics, the performance you see right now is only half of the bandwith the bus is using because future games will pump it up to 16x the bandwith.

stick with 1 GT because its very powerful and you really don't need more than a 6800 and won't need one for a while...(also my opinion)

I think I'm gonna ditch the ACS cooling and go with Zalman Fatal1ty coolers for my vid card, regardless of the card(s) I get so I can crank them up to the 3rd party OC'd cards, $15-$30 more depending if I go SLI or not than hte ACS cooling and the results of the Zalmans seem pretty good

The zalmans are great gpu coolers. I have them on my sli cards on the Asus A8n-premium board. I am actually going the same route. I'm purchasing 2 BFG 7800GT's for SLI (and I just picked up my new A8NSLI32 Asus board). I agree with above that one 7800gt is great but I'm an official SLI junkie now so if you can afford it why not? Artic Cooling apparently makes a really decent vga cooler thats certified for the 7800gt/gtx series as well although I haven't been able to find it in my area yet. I'll see how the Zalmans do on my 7800gt's when I get them and decide if I need to switch.

Good luck. Your rig and mine will be very similar.

If I do SLI, I'm going to go the eVGA route, seen some good reviews but I'm sure they'll all OC the same, but I'll be able to get hopefully close to 500MHz on each w/ the Fatal1ty's on them.

Have you tried Xoxide to getthe AC5's
http://xoxide.com/arctic-cooling-nv-...evision-2.html
just have them shipped to you

I personally use ZipZoomFly for all my stuff...I'll have my rig up and running (hopefully) on christmas day since all my stuff is for x-mas, the only thing I need is good mem which I'll get once my comp working fine and after I sell off my current CPU and GFX card.

My main thing on going SLI is that I dont want to purchase another card that will only give me a 10-15% increase, but it'll give me a huge increase over 1 card for the time being, and new era card will be out soon, thats just technology.

If you get your 7800GT's post some benches and some spec cause i am new to OC'ing and it's my first AMD so if yours runs well I might want to go the same numbers if it all works out..keep me posted

I'd be happy to gator. I'll hopefully be building this weekend (depending on my wife). I went with the Asus 7800Gt's at the last minute, got a deal from the distributor between the new mb and two vid cards.
