unlocking multiplier - Page 2

I'm not sure if this called hijacking a thread, sorry if it is.
I am looking for a engineering sample P4. how would i go about finding one?
Is there a schematic of how and where on the Intel chips they burn the connection to set the multiplier?

Uh, yes there is a 3.8E and a 3.6E^^

and i never said they were fully unlocked, just able to drop the multi to OC like an AMD or something.

well, the E is not typically used to name a LGA775 processor, and is more often used to signify a socket 478 prescott processor

Did a quick search and on Tom's Hardware they mentioned that cpus with PRB=1 are able to switch their multiplier from the default to 14x. I looked in the P4, PD, and P Extreme Ed. datasheets on Intel.com and the only cpus there with PRB=1 are:
3.73 EE
550
560/561
570/571
660/662
670/672
830
840
840EE

The 551 supposedly has reduced power consumption so it doesn't need to downclock during idle. So from what I can tell CrimsonMango is correct. The options for those cpus are stock or 14x, but not the ones in between. To get the full range, you need an ES.

only the 840EE has unlocked multipliers from 14x to 50x IIRC

Why would anyone want to use a multiplier of 50x? Isn't the idea to reduce the multiplier so that you can have a higher FSB and hence run your ram faster, since the processor will only go so fast before it burns up, regardless of which multiplier x FSB combo is used to get it there?

Supposedly the 3.2E and 3.4E (s478) can switch down to 14x as well. I've seen other people mention that the 840EE is fully unlocked as well.

ive never seen a s478 processor drop its multi, and yes, i just mentioned that the 840EE had an unlocked multiplier ranging from 14x up to 50x (16x being stock)

people may want a higher multi so they ran run their ram at a lower frequency with the tightest timings possible and then having the CPU at the highest speed possible by using the multiplier rather than the FSB
