3000+ OC question

Thread Starter
hey, i've been overclocking chips for a long time now (first one was a P-MMX i think) and also a lot of athlon xp goodness (remember the wire-trick, anyone?) but i have a question. i have my athlon 64 3000+ overclocked to 2520mhz-- i can get it to go 2700 but it's not prime95 stable. anyone know what the problem might be? i think it's my motherboard (MSI K8N Neo4-F) not wanting to go above around 300mhz-- what are safe voltages? i brought my athlon64 to about 1.65v and my board to (i think?) 1.6 or 7, but it didn't really improve much. (currently my 64 is at something like 1.56v).

any clues? memory is not the issue; it can easily go up to 250 or so mhz and i'm running a divider to set it to 210 currently. also psu shoudl not be the issue, since i have an antec 550w smartpower....

try upping the vdimm to 2.7-2.8v, that can help stability, even if your running them at stock speeds.

my temps are from 37C at idle to 47C load.

now that the dorm is finally cold again, my cpu is currently at 32C (all heaters were on for a week and made it HOT)

I would agree about upping the V-dim voltage. Also have you tried downloading the latest BIOS Revision for your mobo. That might help as well. Make sure cool and quiet is disabled as well as CPU throttling. That could effect stability as well.

just asking, but why against raising the vdimm? its worked for me and others to help stability, even if the ram was at stock speed.

well upping the memory voltage hasn't done anything yet. prime'95 fails immediately when i run it (round error, got .5 expected .4).

edit: in fact, the error (if i get one) is always that error, no other. weird.

is it a venice or winchester core, anything over about 2700 you need a fair wack more vcore for a winnie and about 2800 for a venice, around the 1.7 mark seems to be what i have needed to do for both winnie and venice. that mobo should be ok over 300 unless u are having a bios issue.
