Opteron has double the cache and better chance of a high overclock.

Yes 3.4 GHz is possible but that was done with phase change cooling... The processors are not in the same price category, the Opteron 146 is more comparable to the 3200+. In any case, if you can afford teh Opteron, go with that option. It's not jsut faster at stock speeds, it has more cache and the higher multiplier really helps out when overclocking!

What about an Athlon 3700+ 64 San Diego vs. Opteron 148 Venus. Both have same amount of L2 cache and in same price range.
