What are the benefits of AMD moving to DDR2?

Thread Starter
From all of the literature I've read, it seems that DDR-2 has no real advantages over DDR so I'm wondering why AMD is switching to DDR-2. I see that DDR-2 has higher clock speeds, but isn't it just QDR? For any overclocking advantage, don't the speeds have to be greater than 200Mhz, which would be the PC2-8000, but does that exist yet? And, isn't DDR-2 kinda like how DDR500 is, in the respect that the only reason the speeds are that high is because of the greatly increased latency (aside from the voltage differences)?

Or does it more have to deal with total bandwidth? I see that DDR-2 has more bandwidth per channel, so is it the bottleneck for AMD with the integrated memory controller?

Intel is bottlenecked because of thier lack of HTT, AMD seems to be bottlenecked by the speed of the ram at the moment, I heard in early rumor's about M2 that it was going to have ddr3 or xdr?, It would be great for AMD to jump ahead but only time will tell whats really going to help with switching to ddr2.

With the move to DDR2, crazy overclocks like this won't be possible anymore .

Why do you think that?

With DDR2 you have a better chance of running the RAM:FSB at a 1:1 ratio. While still having the option to run a divider you can still crank up the FSB and get even more insane overclocks on not only your CPU but on your RAM as well as keeping tight timings.

I'm talking about CL2. DDR580 with 2-2-2-5 is just crazy .

Hopefully by the time the new socket is released DDR2 will be able to hit CL2 and maybe even 1.5 (I'm not holding my breath for the latter) while still surpassing that FSB and going even higher.

Initally AND was going to side setp DDR2 but the slow development of DDR3 and the xdr is, was might be, oh who knows, I sure cant find diddly on it.
So AMD was forced ot play the upgrade to DDR2 game till something better comes along.
