I have no idea what exactly intails in these SM3.0 "tests," something about it not passing WHQL standards for SM3.0 or whatever. Doesn't change the fact that an NV40 GPU has the hardware-level requirements for SM3.0 and can run them with nice results, we've all seen the FarCry screenshots detailing it. I personally couldn't care less if Microsoft's little attempt at controling the consumer hardware market shows nVidia's hardware is less capable, because if it can draw the image on the screen and look good to me, that's all I care about. But ultimately, it doesn't matter, cause an X800 or X850 does not have the hardware-level requirements to run the shaders either. As someone else pointed out, 'tis better to be able to run it "sorta" on a 6800 than not at all on an X850.
Performance difference, you're talking 8, 9, maybe 10 frames. Both cards will last years performance-wise depending how much you're willing to lower the quality settings in game. The 6800 will last even longer in my opinion with its support for more advanced rendering modes, which will undoubtedly be taken greater advantage of now that both manufacturers have cards with the technology available (X1000 series and 7 series).

That's what we're talking about, I don't think there's ANY AGP card that does from either company.

Uh GeForce 6-series? There is no ATi-made AGP card that supports SM3.0 though, that being the basis of my whole argument
SM3.0 is a shader technology, hard to say without pictures, but it makes things look better when it's coded to use it. It allows for longer and more comples shader instructions to be used on the card, so game developers can make prettier effects, basically.

I've seen their claim, but again, I've yet to see any proof that a 6800 supports Shader 3.0 besides in their description. Can anyone show a pic of a game supporting their claim? Otherwise, the only evidence I have is that they've failed when tested to decode it. I've never claimed that x800 series did, but I'm not believing that the 6800 series can either.

Every quality comparison I've seen has come out either even or slightly in the x800 favor, which feeds my doubt even higher than the failed tests that have been published.

Are you seriously that dumb, deaf, and blind? Or do you just hear what you choose to hear? EVERYONE knows the 6800 series support SM3.0, just because ATi likes to claim that their SM3.0 support is lacking on year-old drivers doesn't negate the fact that it was the only DirectX 9.0C compliant hardware on the market until ATi released the X1000 cards...
