Trying to present that the 6-series cards were failing SM3.0 WHQL tests and were totally incapable of SM3.0 rendering... Just admit you were wrong and we'll all just move on.

the difference is like WOW!OMG***BBQ! its like having 1 pixel then like a million.

sorry just got excited there the difference between xm1.1 and sm3.0 is really great. dose any have any screen shots from CoD2? of SM3.0 and non sm 3.0

also when sm3.0 is running dose it hurt the fps?

edit: well my first card was a 4mb card then i got an fx5200 and then another fx5200. so what im tryin to say here is that im lookin for the best bang for buck card that will last me 2-3years and still play nicely with some eye-candy.
Well, take that review with a bit of salt. I have no idea why, but they were showing SM1.1 vs 3.0. They should've shown 2.1 vs 3.0 since the ATi hardware is completely capable of that. However, in that article there's a link to another article about SM3.0 where they show some better comparisons between SM2.1 and 3.0. Not as big a difference, but I can still see it. And this stuff was from when the technology was in its infancy and few games used it.
Running SM3.0 will be more work on the GPU because it's more complex instructions to process, but that's the same with any graphics-enhancing feature.
I'm not 100% sure CoD2 utilizes SM3.0, but I have seen some screenshots between DirectX 7 mode and DirectX 9 mode that were pretty impressive.

6800GT

Pretty noticable difference in the water and in other places.. So if Nvidia failed that then DANG I would like to see a screenshot of it when it doesnt fail!

Well, I would say the 6800GT. It loses like 5-10 fps over the X800XT, but has better image quality. Plus, I doubt youll be playing at a resolution and graphics settings where 5-10 fps is a huge deal; I would think you would upgrade then if it became a problem..

Wait a second, before I prove that my statement was factual, I want to clarify what you just typed. Before you defended the failing tests by saying it was because they didn't pay off Microsoft, but now you're denying that those results were even published and that it did in fact fail? Pick one and I'll defend myself, but I can't until you stop changing your mind.

In essence it comes down to this. The X850XT/XTPE is the fastest AGP card you can buy, but it's not by a huge margin. You can find plenty of performance benchmarks and it's not a wide gap. The GeForce 6-series card, while a bit slower (also cheaper you noted), is capable of more advanced graphical capability that will be used in future games. If all you care about is raw performance, you should probably get the X850. If you want games that run good and look better, get the 6800. I had a 6800GT, and about the only thing it couldn't do during the time I owned it was play BF2 at 1600x1200. Other than that, it was fine.

Alright, show me your proof, I'd like to see something other than ATi's little sliudeshow. Oh, and please point out to me where I said anything about paying Microsoft for WHQL certification?

what settings was bf2 on (i play at 1280x960) and wat fps did u get?

edit: sometimes though that 5-10 fps could mean a stable game from a choppy one.

Amen!

That slideshow just shows how unprofessional ATI really is. Any company that releases something like that because their product cant compete is just pathetic.

Isn't that what you're implying here?
I have no idea what exactly intails in these SM3.0 "tests," something about it not passing WHQL standards for SM3.0 or whatever. Doesn't change the fact that an NV40 GPU has the hardware-level requirements for SM3.0 and can run them with nice results, we've all seen the FarCry screenshots detailing it. I personally couldn't care less if Microsoft's little attempt at controling the consumer hardware market shows nVidia's hardware is less capable, because if it can draw the image on the screen and look good to me, that's all I care about

Btw Bigval, how do you know that ATI released that?

Being the graphics-lover I am, I tried everything on high except textures (because I had heard and now have experienced you need 2GB of RAM for that). It was "ok" I guess, it was pretty choppy and not something I'd want to play with. It ran fine on 1280x960 though (never did figure out why the demo didn't have a 1280x1024 option...).
