BF2 Commander Help

Thread Starter
I want someone to explain everything they know about the commander position if they can/want to. I have recently picked to be commander and I didn't even know what controls to use to activate any of the special features lol
So can some BF2 guru explain the controls/tactics, strategies of being commander? Thanks

This should probably be a FAQ, but here goes.

When you are commander, DO NOT RUN AROUND LIKE YOU'RE IN THE REGULAR GAME. Find someplace to hide if you can. That's the first most important thing. You can't use any of your command swhile you're waiting to respawn, so while you're dead your troops have no supply support, ar anything else.

Second most important I think is SCAN SCAN SCAN!!! Click scan for a satellite scan to see enemy targets in red, when you see a bunch in one big group, use artillery to get some kills, and thin them out, making it easier for your team to handle them. Do that by clicking the Artillery box to the left of the screen, and when the crosshairs come up, put them on that area, and left click. Realize that the arty takes a little while to come down, so try to anticipate where they are going to be heading, and fire it a little ahead of them. Also, scan can help your troops in much the same way that the UAV can. Even though they can't see what the scan shows, if you right click on a red blip, and drag down to spotted, it'll identify the type of threat, and show position on their maps. It won't get you points, but will REALLY help you win battles.

Remember to give your squads objectives, click on a squad to the left, and then right click the map where you want them to go, and use the pulldown menu to tell them attack, defend, repair, whatever. Remember that you can only give a squad one objective at a time, and remember how annoyed you get when your objective changes every minute. Don't be shy with praise, either, it'll help you to get your squads motivated to accomplish their objectives rather than mulling around, you do that be clicking on one of the squads to the left, then right clicking, and dragging down to commend squad. there's a bunch of other things you can say too, like if they refuse an order, you can yell at them, yada yada.

Supply drops are done the same way as artillery is called, I try to drop it where my squad is being attacked, and are trying to hold a position, same for the UAV, although obviously if your enemy is on the run, you would do well to drop supplies half way to your team's next objective, or right outside it so they can re-ammo before heading in for an assault.

Also, try to keep track of what types of soldiers you have in each squad, on each squad to the left of the screen, it'll show icons for all the members of that squad, showing what kit they're carrying, so if the enemy blows up your artillery, don't tell a squad with no engineer to get repairs to that position if you can help it. I'll also show you whether or not they're ina vehicle or whatever. When you click on a squad, it'll show the members of that squad in white on map, so try to take into consideration where they are befoer giving them an objective, don't have them running all over the map, when they're obviously working on something else.

Commander is an intimidating job, at least it was for me at first, because there's a billion things going on, but you'll get the hang of it.

That's my advice, hope it gets you started, and good luck!

-Sean

Yeah thanks, I figured most of this out yesterday when I got to be commander again. It's pretty difficult keeping track of everything that goes on, my team lost bad when I was commander lol, might be because they were pretty noobish, might be because I sucked as commander, oh well thanks again

No prob. One last thing I forgot was that as Commander, since you won't be in direct combat anyway, you should always be the engineer. I always am when I'm commander, that way if worse comes to worst, you can repair your own stuff when you have to.
