Game freezes

Thread Starter
I play a lot of warcraft III. I've been using my x700 pro for the pass 3/4 months with no problem. All of a sudden, my game freezes completely. game sound crashes, the whole machine freeze. no keyboard button works, even numlock... can't ctrl alt del, mouse freeze. Must force shutdown with power.

I reinstall catalyst driver to omega to check it out. reinstall my game. still freezes. i reboot, it will freeze right away when i get into the game menu.
sometimes after 15 minutes into the game. sometimes 1 hour.

If i wake up in the morning. it will work for like 3 hrs before any problems. Does anyone know what's wrong? I change my cpu fan back to the stock one... no help. everything works and I can leave my computer on for the whole day until I start a game.

Is it my vid card? It was working fine for 3 months!!!

Try checking your cpu and gpu temps with a program like speedfan. Also feel the heatsink of both, is it too hot to touch?

Is there a way you can check the temperatures on the card. A lot of things can cause a game to freeze but one of the most common ones is an overheating video card.

I was playing the game in windows mode while monitoring the GPU temp. It still freezes while my GPU is running at 50 degree.

If I shut down the computer for a few hours, the game seems to play for a few hrs until it freezes. It's not a problem with the temperature, what else can it be?

The game, vid drivers, directx have all been reinstalled.

my normal computer function works fine with no problem for days. But once I start the game it goes dead pretty fast.

I had the same problems. Even went as far as reformating and starting fresh but still no luck. In my case it turned out to be a BIOS problem so I just flashed one revision back and my computer seems to be fine now. Try checking if your PSU is stable under load if you can, preferably with a multimeter.

Only resort to flashing a BIOS if newer revisions offer better stability and/or fix critical errors. If you experience problems AFTER you flashed your BIOS then it is a good idea to go back to the previous one. A BIOS does not "go bad" all of a sudden (at least I don't think so).
Like all hardware, video cards can deteriorate over time, but nothing to drastic, unless you abuse it (careless overclocking comes to mind). Most problems are software related; try doing a clean install of your drivers.
