Worthy upgrade?

Thread Starter
Considering the system in my sig, would this be a worthy upgrade for gaming?

ASRock 939Dual
G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB
FX-55 for $450

Would I see any difference in gaming with just these three parts? At least I could upgrade my video card down the road to PCI-Express and still keep my AGP one right now. How long would this system last me for playing games on top-notch settings with a later video card upgrade? Answers will be appreciated

You would certainly notice an improvement with those components. Your card (and mine as well) are already a bit behind, not necessarily on speed as they can crank out frames pretty quickly, but on effects (no pixel shader 3, no HDR, etc.) I think that card will still serve us well for another couple of years, but we're going to miss more and more of the eye candy as time goes on. It sounds like any system is going to be behind in the next 12 or so months without a PPU.

As for overall longevity of your upgraded system with a new video card, that really depends on your desire to stay right on the cutting edge. I'm usually motivated to upgrade when I start to notice significant issues on higher end games, typically every 3ish years. The value of the upgrade is something only you can assess. I think those components will make a nice difference in your current setup and will allow for the addition of a killer GPU down the road. If you have the money on hand and the desire, go for it. It's no fun to sit on things and wait for the next generation to come out when you could have new toys now.

Well I'm sixteen, so it's either upgrade or car. Upgrade or car. I'm leaning towards upgrade

EDIT: and about my PSU, it's about a year old so I think I got one before they started exploding

I would definitely just get the San Diego 3700 and just overclock it, stock is only .4ghz difference and they are really just the same, (over than that)
Newegg.com sells the 3700 for $233, which is a lot cheaper than $450

I bought a 3200 and overclocking it to 2.5ghz (2.0ghz stock), and only paid $152, (now I just need to wait for christmas for the rest of my new rig)

If you dont wanna pay $128 for a dfi, you could go with the chaintech vnf4 for only $68, my friend has one and it works great, good with oc'ing

edit: with the money you save on the cpu you could easily get a nice video card, such as a 6800gs,
which @ $209, they are both still cheaper than that fx-55

Well I'm not keen with downgrading my video card now. And I promised myself that my next one would have 512MB. So it looks like I'll just stick with my current setup for about another year. I've already got $600 saved up so hopefully next year I'll just build a whole new rig.
