Upgrade RAM from 2x512; add 1GB CL2.5 or 512MB CL2?

Hi there,

I want to upgrade my RAM. Currently I have 2x512 MB OCZ PC3200 EL CL2-3-2-5 Platinum in DualChannel. (worth ~120)
Now what should I do?

1) Upgrade with 1x512 MB CL2 quality RAM (~60-70 €) -> Can run 1.5GB safely at CL2
2) Upgrade with 1x1024 MB CL2.5 RAM (~90-100 €) -> Can run 2GB safely at CL2.5-4-4-8 (The new lowest SPD)
3b) Upgrade with 1x1024 MB CL2.5 RAM (~90-100 €) and run 2GB at CL2-3-2-5. (This 1024er is supposed to be extremely overclockable, an online magazine managed to push 2x256 from this RAM type from 2.5-4-4-8 to 2-3-2-5 on the same clock speed).

Selling 2x512 and buying 2x1024 is not an option due to money.
I have the Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2-Ultra with 3 RAM places. Now from how I undestood it from the manual there will still be Dual Channel support for the 2x512 MB sticks if I add another stick of memory. Is that correct?

The RAM will be mainly used for gaming. How much performance difference does a better RAM timing make in contrast to 512 MB more.

Thanks!

Nope, it will be in single channel. And, if you throw cl 2.5 RAM in with cl 2.0 RAM, the RAM will automatically run at cl 2.5.

Hey thanks for your reply,

I just found that it would be possible to exchange my 2x512 for 2x1024. I'd sell the 512ers on ebay and buy 2x1024 for about 200€. then i'd have 2 gigs in dual channel. i hope to get about 90-100 for my 2x512 (retail is 140)

Now my question is.. does it make a difference whether I buy 2x1024 as a Kit (together in 1 box) or seperately?
The kits are about 10-20% more even though they contain the exact same sticks. I think they are guaranteed to run in dual channel but if I buy 2 exact same sticks seperately it should in run in dual channel with no probs too, right?

Yep, as long as you buy to matching sticks they will run in dual channel.
